CATTLE MARKET 8TEADY.

The Portland Union Stock ' Yards
Company rcportt at rollowt:
Following are receiptt or livestock
on this market ror the past week:
Cattle 1557, calvea 137, hogt 1885,
sheep 8138.
Although the week opened with a
ralr run or cattle, receiptt have been
very light tlnce Tuesday and prices
remain steady to ttrong with bett
steert bringing $5.75, medium tteert
$5.60, lighter and thinner stuff all the
way from $4.75 to $5.25. Buyers are
anxious to secure good cattle a the
demand for the past week has con
siderably exceeded the supply. Cows
and heifers continue to bring fancy
prices for best qualities, best heifers
selling from $4.60 to $5, cow $4.75.
Very few calves on the market and
good veal In demand, best light calves
readily brought $7.35 on this week'
market Bull and stags remain
steady at rormer quotation with Tery
few offering.
That the demand for nog Is on
the Increase I evidenced by the ract
that buyers are making less distinc
tion between rough hogs and the well
rinished 175 to 225 pound porker that
has rormerly commanded almost their
entire attention. Hog weighing
around 300 to 350 pounds are bring
ing $7.75 and stocker are also quot
ed at $7.75. A there have been no
well flnlshed medium weight swine
on the market ror some time specula
tion is rife as to the price buyers
would be willing to pay.
Monday's sheep market was a good
one but a receipts continued to In
crease during the week and still more
mutton In sight for next week' mar
ket, prices In this division are very
weak. Best wethers sold ror $3.65
on Monday but hardly brought $3.25
at the close of the week's marketing,
ewes opened at $3.10 and closed at
$2.60- best lamb now selling around
5c. No Increase Is expected as long
a these heavy receipt continue.
