A new iaflustiy is uIkiuI to be es tablished in this community and la now oust Its initiatory formation in tin- line of a paint manufacturing es talillshiiiem. HavinK secured an un limited supply of the proper mineral in rUiso proximity of Orepon City, a corporation lias lieen formed under the name or The Old Aztecs Paint Compiiny. with a paid up capital stock of llii.niitl. for the purposi) of manu f:icuiiin and eniutKinR ii all he stihnidi'iy lines of business ronnected with the niiimilacture of paiur. For a number of years deposits of a mineral substance 1ms been found nml known to exist in several loca tions about this city. Numerous ex permients and analysis have been Hindi- to determine the commercial value of the deposits by different parties, but of no avail until quite recently. U B. Talley, of Oregon City, a painter and paper hanger by trade, was railed to the home of Louis Vlerhus near Clear Creek to d some work. Incidentally he was shown a sample ol this mineral; as soon a Mr. Talley got his eyes upon it he grubbed it and exclaimed excitedly, "liee whiz! that is what I have been looking for." He then went to ex plain how he had once engaged In the manufacture of 'paint from this name kind of mineral under the name of the Old Aztecs Paint Company some veais ago. when living lu Arizona on ills ranch, which he still owns a pro fessor, lv the name of Ashburn, was sent to Arizona by the Smithsonian Institute of Washington, D. C, to ex cavate for relics of the Aztecs Indians, and on arriving there he found the buried ruins of an Indian village on Mr. Talley's place; getting permission for excavating ami also engaging Mr. Talley in his employe, they found crockery painted and other paintings, and at once seeing the paint and col ors in such good state of preserva tion after ages of exposure convinced them that the preparation of tnis paint was superior to any known pa-ut in existence, and with others this was one of the lost arts of ancient nations. In the course of the work of ex cavating and collecting the relics of which Mr. Talley Is lu possession of 40 barrels and six car loads were shipped to the Smithsonian Institute, he found an urn containing all the different Ingredlnnts of , which this paint Is made of. In vegetable form, fully preserved with this mineral. I'p on seeing some of the work of "this extinct race on pottery and other articles was impressed with the In destructable nature of the paint which centuries of exposure to the weather had been unable to dim Its luster. He spent several years in Investi gating and searching for the different herbs contained In the urn and the mineral, which he found on the plains and mountains of Arizona in abund ance. He then had them carefully analvzed and from this source learn ed to make Identically the same paint used by the Aborigines and can now procure the Identical ingredlence In chemical form. He then commenced manufacturing the paint and all went well until the Indian chief who own ed the land where the deposit of thi mineral was 'found, refused to per mit tbem to have any more of the mineral. This put an end M the manufacture. - But enough had been made to demonstrate the value of this product, nothing whatever seems to have any effect upon the paint. Another deposit of this mineral was found by Ben Nug. near Centralis. Wash., and having had previously be came acquainted with Mr. Talley and knowing of the paint being made from this mineral and after a .sufficient teat, he persuaded Mr. Talley to come to Centralla, and a company was formed for its manufacture wlien again the superior quality of this paint was demonstrated, but only hav ing the land leased from the railroad company, it was purchased by other paint company, sit as to destroy the competition It was producing. A (est on prean-golug vessels was made whose bottom wai painted with this paint for the Alaska Trans ponatkin Company, and after having gone a trip to Alaska, being months j in salt water, have returned to dry ; dock to find the paint just as bright i and clear as when first put on. not a crack or erosion, corrosion or other defect. This means a saving of thousands of dollars to ship owners, also all pil ing by a preparation' of this mineral will absolutely prevent the Teredo in-. Feet from destroying them. j This is a long looked ofr discov-i ery and enormous amount of mateflali has been published on this subject during the past ten years, principally in this country and Great Brittain. : In fact, we are told In Cosmos (Pari, Feb. 12) by Jules Barcon in "h chapter of Practical notes on chem istry, that the metallurgist who shal. devise a sure wav to protect Iron or steel from rust will be assured a large fortune, and this is, something the Old Aztecs Paint ouipany can do when properly api4,ml. Mr. Talley has been looking for' this material for a number of years and is delighted with its find of an Inexhaustible supply which has been secured. The old machinery of the former company has been acquired. This machinery will soon be placed in a large building at Mount Pleas ant, which is now under construc tion, and expects to have the plant in full operation in 60 days. New machinery will be added and the. manufacture will be pushed as vigor ously a?' money and enterprise will accomplish. Suits on Promi-ory Notea. W. T. Brice has filed a suit against Mike McCormick for 11200 on a prom isory note given May 16, 1907, to A. C. Ruby & Co., and payable at the Commercial National Bank of Pen dleton.
