Commendatory In the extreme is the action of Circuit Judge Eakln in declining to. sanction the movement to prevent the hUtoric home of Dr McLoughlln from being placed upon the public square. The decision was rendered on purely legal grounds and the personal point did not and was not permitted to enter Into the case, so far as His Honor was con cerned. nevertheless The Enterprise is happy to be given this opportunity to warmly commend his decision In an editorial sense. Dr. McLoughlin's work In this great Northwest country can not be over estimated. History, and reliable history too, tells us that time and again he reached down in his capaci-1 ous pocket to help the needy, assist j the suffering and succor those who J tad encountered all sorts of privations in order to make their homes in Ore gon. What would this State have been without this pioneer spirit? Who; are we, who came after, and who And living comparatively easy, as com pared with the days of the SO's. that we should find fault, and malign the building where the good Doctor en tertained hundreds at his own ex pense, simply because It Is said to be "old. dilapidated and unsanitary." The building is old and dilapidated. It is probably no more unsanitary than other places in Oregon City. Even then, does it have to remain so? Does any one imagine that the McLoughlln Memorial Association in tends to leave the building In its present condition? Has it not been publicly stated time after time that the structure will be thoroughly ren ovated and made presentable and in habitable? Those who have ears to hear, let them hear. PROPOSES CORPORATION TAX. The most interesting and Important phase of the twelfth week's considera tion of the tariff bill has been the presentation of a proposition, favored by President Taft, to Impose a tax of two per cent on the net earning of corporations, and the decision of tl.e Senate leaders to bring in an amend ment embodying the President's Ideas, to be offered as a substitute for the income tax proposition. Only second In importance to this has been the agreement reached by Senators Bailey and Cummins on the income tax prop osition, as a result of which there is now before the Senate only a single income tax amendment which, fn brief, imposes a tax of two per cent on all Incomes over $5,000 a year, Including those of corporations, and carrying a provision of reimbursement to stock holders of corporations, taxed under the law, whose total incomes from all sources are less than $3,0')''), of the 1 amount which, as stockholders. .he;' contributed to the tax paid by Hie to' poration. Portland will be the rallying point for Baptists of the Northern half of the continent during the last week of the month. The Northern Baptists Association will open lis annual con vention here on June 25 and the gath ering will continue for one week. An interesting programme has been pre pared and there will be numerous re ceptions, excursions and other func tions during convention week. Starting a Business For Yourself It is unreasonable for a young man to think that he can set himself up in business with out some capital to invest in the enterprise. Perhaps this lack of capital has been the cause of your working for some one else in stead of yourself these many years. If so, it is high time that you began to accumulate a fund for the purpose of establishing yourself in some good paying business. An account with this bank will afford you a convenient, safe and an ideal method of put ting your surplus sums where they will grow into a fund, that in time, may make possible your business success. The Importance of the hog as a mortgage lifter has never boon more evident than now. The hog market at Portland has advanced recently from 17.75 to $8.15 per 100 pounds for suitable fat hoes and packers say the Supply is practically nil. The hog raising industry is one of the most lucrative to which farmers of the Northwest can turn their attention. Oregon and Washington need more hogs and offer good prices to grow ers. Figures here are higher than In the Chicago market and there Is every inducement for more extensive hog raising. Do You Want to Help Boom This Town?
