It would be an impossibility to get a half dozen people to agree on the temperature of the past cold winters. The average Oregonian's memory Is rather short lived. Mulinoite8 are enjoying fine sleigh ing this week. It is great sport for the young people especially. The hill back of Mrs. Churchill's Is a scene of activity these days. The i young folks have a regular toboggan 'slide there and go flying down over the snow on all kinds of sleds, and some of them without sleds as they get dumped off in the snow and are unable to stop. Professor Baldwin, of the Macks burg chool, spent Saturday and Sun day at Mr. Wallace's home enjoying the snort, coasting with the boys. Miss Myrtle Craig and sister, Mabel of Clackamas Heights, are spending a few days at Mr. Wallace's home. Johnny Ericson left Saturday for Corvallis, to attend school at the Agri cultural college. Mr. Waldron, our stage driver, comes out in a sleigh. He does not carry very many passengers this cold weather. William Wallace, of this place, died at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning, and was buried at Oregon City, Wed nesday. Last night was the coldest of the season, the temperature going six be low lero. The Canby mail carrier passed through our burg Sunday for the first time since the snow fell. BEAVER LAKE. News is scarce, but snow is plenti ful 20 inches with the thermometer at 15 above. Den Wade was doing business in Scotts Mills one day last week. C. F. Early, foreman of the Ogle Mountain mines, is stopping in our midst during the blizzard. The dance at Ed Wyland's last Fri day night was a grand success. The light fantastic was tripped till a late hour. Sawing wood and feeding stock are the principal chores now-a-days. LOGAN. Oh! The snoff, the beautiful snow, Darn the stuff, why don't it go. The problem, at this writing, is to keep apples, potatoes, canned fruit, hands and toes from freezing and some did not solve it in time. TL!s morning, the 12th, the thermometer showed 2 degrees below zero. Lamps, stoves, blankets, sacks and numerous other things are brought into use. Wood piles melt away fast, and the farmers' friends of the feathered tribe are dying fast, chickens are prisoners. Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Fischer have anothe son at their home. Gus says he is raising soldiers to fight the Japs. A. Swales has returned from a two weeks' visit with his two daughters who live down the Columbia. Coffee Just Coffee, but perfect Coffee. Damage is done by the snow ia the neighborhood in breaking down roofs by ics weight. Quite a lot of damage is also done on telephone lines. Cat tle ranchers and farmers are busy lixikiiig for their cattle. U. S. Dix was butchering hogs last Monday. George Gardner of Oregon City, Is at Colton for a short visit. Mr. Lafferty, of Estacada was vis iting at F. Countryman's last week. He started for Estacada Friday and had a hard time getting through the snow with his cart. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hult, a son, last week. J. Putz helped Mr. Bergreen butch ers hogs. When the snow melts, high waters are looked for, which Mr. Snodgrass will make good use of in driving Us bolts. STAFFC30. It has bee a bllzzardy weto. since Tuesday, the 5th. On that day it blew a gale all day, reminding Da kota residents of old times, when ihey had to hang to their bats with one hand and to the earth with the other, to keep from being blown off into space. It snowed too, and has oeeti adding more or less every day or night since, until at least a foot deep lies upon the ground and in places drifted to three feet or more, and Saturday night about two inches of the beautiful fell. There was a clear, bright sunshine Sunday afternoon, but mercury only climbed to 22, s.0 we had no thaw. On Friday night it registered at Mr. Gage's, who keeps the record for the Bureau at Portland, two degrees above ,and since the na tive Webfooters have become a little used to It, sleighs, mostly home made, begin to fly about. Mr. Aerni, whose day for town is Wednesday of each week, did not go till Friday last week. People are putting stoves or ian terns into their cellars to guard against freezing. Fowls stay disconsolately in cheir scratching pens, not knowing whui to make of the snow, and if one ven tures to fly a few feet It settles in the treacherous whiteness, and would stay till it froze stiff if not carried back to safety. Mrs. Mays, with her son and daugh ter, spent Sunday afternoon at Mr. Gage's.- Mr. Freeman and two child.un rre visiting with her sister, Mrs. Gorge Aden, of Frog Pond. The two Mrs. Gage drove to OBwego Saturday to attend Grange, and being weii wrap ped and eastern born and brad, they suffered no hardship. We have Just heard that the mer cury at Gage's went down to two de grees below Monday night, the 11th, being four degrees colder' than Fri day night. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Toedeman went to town Tuesday with a load of hogs. Miss Julia Weddle returned last week Monday from Jefferson, wl.ere she spent the holidays with relatives MEADOW BROOK. With 18 Inches of snow and two above, the people are getting along fine. Professor Dibble has completed his school after spending the holidays with his best girl at Walton. Not much doing for excitement Everbody is rather tender hearted, or footed, do not know which. Mr. Hall and Mr. Bonacher made a business trip to town last week to have a trip through the snow, I sup poses Mr. Larson while sawing wood for Ralph Holman decided to adjourn for the snow storm. t Professor Dibble and R. L. Orem went hunting Saturday, but came home without any deer, which tbey were looking for. School was out Monday. Professor Dibble bid his scholars all good bye and went home to kill a cougar If he could find one. The school attendance was quite small during the snow. Some of our folks say all of this Swift R. Yes. we all love the beautiful, but wo would like to get rid of the beau tiful snow Just now. We would pre fer the welcome sight of the gentle rain and mud and it would seem like dear old Oregon then. There was no church last Sunday at Teazel Creek on account of so many windows being broken by some person or persons which makes It too cold to warm up with one stove. Jesse Bagby is reported better this week. His many friends will be glad to see him out again. Mi, and Mrs. Melton and Rachel spent Sunday at the home of Francis Qtiinn. Stockmen are looking blue, espe cially those with plenty of stock and a scarcity of feed, but we will say eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow a Chinook may come. MOUNTAIN VIEW. The cold weather still continues. It Is zero weather every morning. Two inches of snow fell again Tuesdav ev- jenlng. Cow bells for sleigh bolls are neard m an directions. There Is a great deal of sickness here at present. The children are having chicken pox and there Is one case of whooping cough. Grandma Molloy is still on the sick list. Grandma Billiard and Mrs. Frank Billiard are suffering with hard colds. Mrs. Parish is sick this week. Pr. Strickland is In attendance. Louis May and baby, of Sellwood, spent two days last week here with his parents. Mrs. Will Henderson is seriously 111. Mrs. Delia Gottberg took a sleigh ride out to Mt. Pleasant Monday to visit with relatives. Miss Hazel Francis went to Che halis. Wash., last week and will visit there and at Ballard, Wash., among relatives. CLARKES. It looks like Klondike at presont. We have two feet of snow In Clarkeg and Sunday night was the coldest night we had. Some are enjoying sleigh rides and some want rain again. This is the coldest weather we have had for years. The M. E. Church people had their basket social last Saturday evening. Mr. Marshall was hauling hay last week. ' Mr. Marquardt was In town last week Wednesday on business. Frank and Harry lilttner took a lotd of spools to town last Friday and retnrned Sunday. Our mall was delayed for a few days on account of the snow. The carrier could hardly travel. STONE. The 12th inst. the thermometer reg istered two degrees below zero and it is reported that on Arthur's Prai rie at Mr. Hagerman's, It registered 10 degrees below zero within a dis tance of lss than three miles. .The cold snap and terrible cold has pre vented us from getting out of the house to enjoy the cold spell. Samo may be said by many in regard to such decaded weather In the Willam ette Valley. When the storm came on, people seemed bewildered and dis posed to hole up for the winter, but the low, hue and cry of the likewise astonished and hungry stock soon put their owners on the move to pass out the feed that they had In store for Just such emergencies. Then all the old sleds were looked over (sorry looking things some of them were, too), new one were Improvised of various designs. By this time girls became much Interested and expect ant, and In a degree slelghridlng be came an assurd thing, them as It colder grew the unusual pleasure grew old very fast, but so long as It lasts we are determined to wear It out since It only comes our way about once In ten years. Harry Groff and Tom Splnnett, who have been In North Yakima for about a month returned lust week. They have been setting out fruit tree on their land which they recently" pur eluded at that place. George Shulu was In Barton Sun day visiting with the'Judd family, but owing to the cold weather he was un able to get homo until Monday after noon. This Is very unusual weath er for old Wcbfoot. The thermometer registered 2 below xero on the hill Tuesday morning, the 12th. Wo hope it will s.khi moderate. Ou New Year's eve a surprise party was given on Mr. and Mrs. Kay Wood U; and they were greatly surprised. About 26 persons werj present aud spout a pleasant evening together. Miss Myrtle Woodle returned to Portlnnd to resume her studies, af ter spending the holidays nt home. Dirk Gibson butvhered five hogs Saturday. Mr. aud Mrs. John Palfrey, of Hope, North Dakota, came to Eagle Creek last week to niuke his brother, E. U Palfrey and family, a visit. As It gets so much colder In their homo state than It ever gets here, this cold snnp will not have much effect upon them. , Mr. and Mrs. Jess Douglass return ed to Portland Sunday on their re turn to their home at Wrentham, Or., after making their relatives a visit of over two weeks' duration. Miss Ulna Mlourfass accompanied h'er brother Jess and his wife lo Eagle Creek. Sunday. Ed. Douglas attended the dance at Burton Saturday night. Miss Elsie Hat i and Mrs. R. It. Gibson called on Mrs. Wesley Doug lass Sunday evening. Mrs. Wesley Douglass made a brief business visit to fagle Creek on Mon day. FIRWOOD. Everybody had a Jolly time at tho basket social entertainment Saturday evening. Several sleighing parties came from Sandy. Plenty of occasion for mirth, while the Coons held tho floor. There seemed to be some at t ractlon for tramps, who certainly showed they had had some experience in that line. Little Ruth DeShazer set a good example. In speaking, for those much older than herself. The determination to have an organ for the next meeting was shown In the liberal bidding on the baskets. The lowest priced basket being $2.50. The total receipts of the evening were $"i0.2r.. Many who had planned on attending were kept home on account of the snow. Much credit Is due A. (1. Hornstedt, of Sandy, who auction eered the baskets. No one could have done better. Mr. E. D. Hart, In be half of tho association, went to Port land Monday morning, to secure an organ. He has had considerable ex perience with musical Instruments. Miss Ldora Mllilron, who has been spending the past three months with her parents at Pasadena, Cal., has re turned to Flrwood. Her many friends are glad to see her back. J. Kelsecker Is spending a few days with his folks at Flrwood. Miss Nina Heacock, the Firwood school teacher, expects to bo at.lo to resume her work In another week. Harvey Kehres Is spending :he week wlih his folks at Dover. DAMASCUS AND ROCK CREEK. Nothing doing. Even the thermomctors have their ups and downs, but down to a very cold degree now. . The GreHham mall carrier does not come at all on account of snow drift ing 25 feet near Ous Rlchey's at Sycamore. Most of the people are tied up, wires broken and only mall from Clackamas route. Those who have good sleds are out, and there is a great many enjoying the snow while it lasts. Some are attending church at Sunnysldo, going i with their sleighs; only a few attending school. Damascus has a photograph gal lery, and Is located at Mr. Snlder's house. The photographer does good work. Call and have your pictures taken.
