In an eastern city a hotel clerk re
cently won for his wife a millionaire
widow whose heart he had captured
because of his polite attention to her
when she met with an accident while
traveling. We do not know whether
this will or will not lead hotel clerks
and other officials to show additional
courtesy to supposedly wealthy spins
ters and widows, but certain it Is
that a little more courtesy all round
would not come amiss.
The Liberal victory in Cuba at the
presidential election was not unex
pected and the islanders are to be
congratulated on the good order that
fact prevailed and on the prospect
that affords of a stable government.
But the real testing will come when
American ocupation ceases and the
Cubans try to run things alone. That
they may prove equal to the task is
the hope of every friend of Cuba and
of responsible government.
In Chicago the other day a promi
nent real estate man was indicted,
tried and convicted for forgery in the
short space of one afternoon. That
was in striking and acceptable con
trast to the usual order, especially In
the case of rich offenders. It shows
that the law can be swift and effec
tive enough when absurd technicali
ties are not allowed to block the
course of justice.
The new electoral franchise bill in
troduced in the Hungarian parliament
reminds one of the "Fancy Franchise"
bill introduced In the EDgllsh parlia
ment sometime in the sixties. The
many restrictions and conditions of
the Hungarian biil are evidently de
signed to retain the power in the Mag
yar element of the population.
