Nothing Is left of the old contention
that our foreign trade would be ruined
by the present tariff law. Instead of a
decline In this respect an unprecedented
expansion has occurred and Is at the
highest mark at this time. No tariff
commission Is needed to arrive at an
opinion aa to tbe effect of American
protection on our foreign commerce. A
practical test covering more than ten
years is before the people. Official fig
ures tell tbe story. Opponents of pro
tection cannot touch them without
making a fatal breach In their old ar
ray of arguments Our productive re
sources have been stimulated by pro
tection, and foreign buyers have great
ly multiplied because It Is to their In
terest to deal with us. Protection has
advanced our position In tbe markets
of the world. An old cry Is still heard
that protection Is the mother of ths
trust, as If such combinations are
unknown In free trade countries. The
present tariff law has strengthened the
policy of protection at every point, and
the Chicago platform will do It Justice.
