The girl knit her brows, hit her Up

Just then a man came out of the
building before which they stood, ap
proached the young lady and said:

"This gentleman." she said, meaning

hadn't a wife and family, I'd help you

lawyer. I'll see that you are well paid

ner to the office of a Justice of the
peace. The Justice was coming out oa

"Marry this couple," said the lawyer,
"and do It quick."
"Too guarantee It's all riant?"

"The names?"
"Mine is nobcrt Blair Southwlck."
"Your name, please."
"Ella Ruth Gurecy."
"One minute of 12," remarked the
lawyer, loo.Iug at his watch and shov
ing It back In his pocket excitedly.
"Go ahead, Jndge. and be quick about
it"
A brief ceremony was performed, and
a moment after the couple bad been
pronounced husband and wife the clock
struck 12. The bride fell limp into a
chair and fanned herself vigorously.
"Now make out a certificate," said
the lawyer to the Justice, "stating that
you married these two before 12 o'clock
tills day." then, turning to Bob, "If
you will accompany me and Miss Gur-
ney
"Mrs. Southwlck, you mean."
"Beg pardon to my oQce we will
be happy to make this marriage worth
your while, and I will guarantee you a
divorce without trouble or remunera
tion." "Must that be got right off?" asked
Bob. "There's been hurry enough
about getting Into the thing. I would
like a little time about getting out of
It"
The lawyer wiped the perspiration
from his forehead and said more de
liberately: "No hurry about that, I assure you.
Perhaps I may as well explain briefly
the occasion for this hurried marriage,
and we can all meet to arrange further
plans later. Miss Gumey"
"Mrs. Southwlck, please."
"Beg pardon Mrs. Seuthwtck re
turned today from a long trip In for
eign lands, baring been delayed on the
royage home. A year ago her Dade
died leaving a will bequeathing ber hi
fortune on condition that abe marry bla
son, Elmer Gumey, on or before 12
o'clock today. If Elmer Gumey re
fused or died she would Inherit any
way If married on or before the said
date. This was to secure a succession.
Gumey died a week ago."
"Thank you," said Bob. "I'll see you
later about the divorce." Then te the
lady he said. "May I be permitted to
call. Mrs. Southwlck V
"I shall be very happy."
"Will this evening at 8 be eonven
lentr "It will."
"Your address, please."
"Washington place No. 64."
"Good day," ralslnghle hat. "Pleased
to have met you."
For the first time the absurdity of
the situation occurred to the girt, and
she laughed. "Good day. Much
obliged."
"Don't mention It"
There was no divorce. Bob Bonth
wlck, now having a wife to "globe trot"
with him. Is not so bored as formerly.
