President Campbell waa authorized
to rnako a trip East ut onco in order,
through personal Investigation, to se
cure the best possible men for tho fol
lowing positions: A head for the de
partment of Geology, a librarian, a pro-
feasor of Political Science, an associ
ate professor of Civil Englneorlngv
aid an assistant inofesor of Psychol
ogy.
The president of the board was au
thorized to construct at once a new
building to bo completed by tho open
ing of tho Fall semester The plans
have already been drawn for ono that
will contain about fifteen rooms, and
work will begin on It at onco. It will
greatly relievo the overcrowded condi
tion of tho other buildings. Several
other new buildings will be construct
ed as boon as possible, but probably
no work can be done until Spring.
The addition of the now Instructors
to tho teaching force will mean much
for the work of the Cnlverslty. The
rapid growth In the number of stu
dents has greatly crowded many de
partments and some, like the depart
ment of Geology, have been without a
head for some tlmo. Tho Correspond
ence School will be much stronger
than Inst yeur and tho new man In the
department of Political Science will
greutly strengthen tho course prepara

brary will be greatly expanded.
"It will be the jiollcy of the Univer
sity to secure the best possible men
fur these and all other posltlonk," Prea
Idetit Campbell aald today, "for the
real success of any school la measured
by the worth of Its teaching forco. No
eolk-go on the Coast has a better In
structional force than the University
of Oregon and every effort will be
made to keep the standard at the
highest. I have a large number of
applications for each position to bo fill

LAUGHTER AND DIGESTION.
Th ut the normal mlod is really a
basis of good digestion la shown by
the remarkable sensitiveness of the
digestive processes to mental condi
tions. Sudden sorrow, ftad news, dis
aster, grvat loses of property or
friends, (freat disappointments or wor
ry not only arrest all tho. digestive pro
cesses, but even suspend tho forma
tion of the gustrlc juice.
It has been shown that when the gas
tric follicles are dlf tended aud the gas
tric juices flowing freely from them
when ono is hungry and eating with
great relish, the sudden receipt of bad
news completely reveraea the digestive
processes. The gastric glands Immed
iately become parched, dry, feverish,
and food will remain In tho stomach
for many hours with the digestive pro
cesses absolutely suspended.
The digestion seems to be depend
ent upon the condition of the mind.
Often our passing moods hasten or re
tard digestion.
We often hoar pople, especially del
icate women who have nervous dys
pepsia, say that they do not under
stand how It Is that they can go out
to late suppers or banquets and eat
heartily all aorta of Incongruous foods

the chango In tho mental attitude.
Thoy have had a good time; they have
enjoyed themselves. The lively con
versation, tho Jokts which caused
them to laugh heartily, the bright,
cheerful environment completely
changed the mental attitude, and, of
course, these conditions were reflected
lu the dlgi-stlon and every other part
of tho aystem, Laughter and gxd
cheer aro enemies of dyspepsia. Any
thing which will divert tho dyspeptic's
mind from his ailment will Improve
his ingestion. When they were at

as a matter of fact, It has probably
been wrought by chango of environ
