NEWS OF THE COUNTY
SHUBEL.
The presiding elder of the Evangel
ical church preached here last Sun
day afternoon to his congregation.
Born, to Mr. and Mrs. William
Moehnke. June 20, a girl.
W. W. H. Samson passed through
here on his way to Clarkes, one day
last week, to auctioneer a sale at that
place.
Mary Massing came home from
Portland to see the old folks and at
tend the entertainment.
Miss Elnore Ointher came home
from Marquam where she has been
teaching the past year.
James Boeson sold and delivered
some shingles to C. Hornschuch one
day last week.
Robert Glnther closed a successful
term of school here last week.
Last Saturday night marked the
closing exercises of the school. Though
the weather was unusually severe, a
large audience greeted the pupils In
their final exercises, and though the
weather was unfavorable, ten gallons
of Ice cream, ninety-six bottles of soda
pop and some twenty pounds of pea
nuts disappeared In short order. One
of the beautiful features of the even
ing was the presentation of a hand
some gift by the pupils to their teach
er, Mr. Samson of Oregon City speak
ing on behalf of the pupils In an Im
pressive manner.
It Is perhaps not out of place at this
time to thank those young women and
men who have so earnestly helped
to make our 'entertainment a success
during the past year. The ladles for
their labor and patience, and the boys
for their generosity. About $135 have
been contributed for the various pub
lic purposes by these same compara
tively few boys and girls from our
own and neighboring districts.

Jay Mulkey came over from Esta
cada this week and Is doing some car
penter work on the Mulkey residence.
Harry Peckovor has the contract,
and Is erecting a nice 6-room dwelling
for Emery Noble on the lacre tract
which he recently purchased from
Judge Kyan.
It is time to make hay now while
the sun shines.

daughter, of Woodburn, were guests
of Mrs. Leith's sisters. Mrs. Hill and
Mrs. George Thomas, last week.
Joseph Wickman Is spending a few
days at Salem.
Miss Celia Bloomer was one of the
graduates from St. Mary's Academy.
Mrs. G. Miller was visiting her
daughter at Albina last week.
Mrs. G. E. Thomas attended the
graduating exercises at Murlark Hall
Wednesday evening.
Miss Lynette Shipley was called
home on acount of the Illness of her
mother.
Mrs. Mary Bluefield, of Tacoma, is
visiting her mother, Mrs. A. Rankin.
Miss Lena Bells, of Portland, was
the guest of Miss Hattie Bethke last
week.
August Guignard, one of the pros
perous fruitgrowers of Hood River,
was visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John Guinard, last week.
Saturday was children's day at the
Oswego grange. In the forenoon the
regular business meeting was held. In
the afternoon J. H. Ackerman, State
Superintendent cf Public Instruction,
addressed the local grang?s, and a
large number of visitors present from
Portland and the surounding country,
on school reforms that he expects to
carry out.
Miss Sylvia Prosser returned home
Saturday after visiting relatives In
Kansas several weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Nixon have
moved from Second street to live with
Mrs. Nixon's parents, on the Johnson
place.
Saturday evening the Masonic Lodge
had a social gathering at the I. O. O.
F. Hall.
The annual school meeting was held
at the school building Monday even
ing. A J. Monk was elected director
for three years, and G. C. Garfield was
elected for one year to fill the vacancy
caused by the resignation of P. H.
Jarisch. John Bichner was re-elected
clerk to serve one year.

GLADSTONE.
Rev. Berry closed hi3 meeting in
the tabernacle Sunday night. The
meeting resulted in several conver
sions and fifty names for the charter
organization. He returned to his home
in Portland Monday morning, followed
by the good wiHhe.s of many Gladstone
people.
Rev. Mulkey will preach in Canby
next Sunday, but will speak at the
Tabernacle at 8 o'clock in the even
ing. About eight or ten men are now at
work on the new school house build
ing and things look like something is
