Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., son of the
President of the United States, ha3
become a full-fledged member of the
order of boxing fans. At Chelsea,
Mass., Freddie Welsh, of England, met
Dave Deshler, New England's best
lightweight, and young Teddy sat at
the ringside. Thinking Welsh was
overmatched, the President's son cast
his sympathies with the Englishman.
The Briton fought a splendid battle
and gradually wore down Deshler, and
by his clever ring tactics had him
helpless in the final rounds.
Teddy, Jr., visited Welsh's room
after the bout and asked to be pre
sented to the young Englisaman and
his second, Ltw Bailey, the Philadel
phia boxing promoter.
In speaking of young Roosevelt,
Bailey says "You can tell by a look
Into his eyes that he is a thoroughbred
in every respect. He is not a big fel
low, but he is all grit and action.
"He likes boxing, and he told me
he was learning the game from a for
mer ring star in Boston. He knows,
as do all who are closely . associated
with the game, that it is not brutal
and that cleverpess and speed will al
ways offset pure strength.
"Younjf" Roosevelt said he did not
care to see unskilled boxers meet, as
it nade it c;:ly a question of endur
ance and strength. lie never misses
a good bout and one of his frlunds told
me he was a flue boxer end few at col
