Steer Lands on Him.
A Hood River butcher had a fierce
experience with a vicious steer Thurs
day while attempting to sacrifice htm
for the butcher's block. The whimsi
cal brute had been run Into the kill
ing stall, and when the butcher went
to shut the door, he gave a vicious
kick and the door landed on the butch
er's pate with a tremendous bang. He
recovered sufficient to try to shut the
door again and the steer landed once
more, and this time peeled three slices
of cuticle from off his face as large
as Mexican dollars. However, he got
the best of hlra In the long run and he
Is now on tap at the blocks. The way
the butcher carves steaks off of his
hind quarters Is with apparent vengeance.

MARRIAGE BY CONQUEST.
A Real Bold. Bad Man, Who Make Off
With tho Heroine.
"I am for marriage by conquest," ds-

when I write the great American novel,
I mean to nave for my hero a real
bold, bad man, who makes off with
the heroine In true bandit fashion. It
Unt fashionable to be bold In wooing
nowadays; lfs a battle of the wits.
The hero starts with an epigram, a
The heroine Is a Christy girl, who
smokes cigarettes and always gets
Invited to rich people's houses. The
hero makes an epigram, and then th
heroine makes another one, and then
follows a scintillation of wit and cyni
cism that makes the reader's head
ache.
"The heroine flirts scandalously with
a rich Wall street broker or soap manu
facturer; the hero gets leaner and hla
jaw gets squarer and his clothes fit
better with each succeeding chapter,
and the wit runs on In a never ceasing
ebullition of fireworks until In the last
chapter, worn out by much talk, he
hoarsely says, 'Marie, let's get married
and talk It over later,' and she indulges
In a boyish laugh and lights another
cigarette, says something about coming
an awful cropper, and asks where tho

"Take the historical account of the
wooing of William the Conquerer. He
was in love with Matilda, and after
some years' delay, according to the
chronicle of Ingerbe, during which ha
was playing the part of the patient
gentle lover, he changed his tactics
suddenly, and waylaid Matilda In the
streets of Bruges, as she was return
ing from mass. Seizing her, with nary
ai epigram nor an apology, he rolled
her In the dirt, spoiled her rich array,
and, not content with these chlvalrlc
lOKens or anecuon, bituck ner repeat
edly, and then bashfully rode off at
full speed. And the next time they
met the fair one accepted him Joyfully
aa her lord and master. Surely, here
Is a romance with plenty of force and
action, and everybody knows that they
married and lived happily forever
after."
A Whirlwind Ship.
"Typhonoid," a word derived from a
Greek term meaning whirlwind, baa
been applied to a new type of boat In
vented by a French engineer, who
seeks to do away with the present day
screw propeller. The new screw is
placed at the bow of the boat Instead
of at the stern, and It Is believed that
by it the centrifugal displacement and
the central void of the present type are
converted Into beueflts, and the limit
to tho advantageous Increase In veloci
ty of rotation of the propeller Is re
moved. The apparatus Is designed to
work by suction In the manner of a
waterspout. The Inventor figures that
his boat, with a thirty-two and a halt
inch screw, will go through the water
at a rate of more than Bixty-two miles
an hour.
