TWILIGHT GLEAMS
The ladies of Twilight met at the
fiall Wednesday and organized a co
operative improvement society. The
officers elected are: President, Mrs.
Lulu Thompson; secretary, Miss Em
ma Wllehart; treasurer, Mrs. George
Lazelle. The society will meet every
Wednesday. ' They are quilting and
walk from the hall down the hill to
connect with the walk put down some
time ago. Two quilts were quilted
Wednesday and a pleasant social day
enjoyed as well. Present at this
meeting were Mesdames Thompson,
Lazelle, Winesett, Joehuke, Hilton,
Wilson, Martin, Shrlner, Boylan and

CITY RELAY RACE
The second annual Oregon City
Portland relay race for Portland grade
schools will occur Saturday, June 1.
The start will be made from the west
end of the suspension bridge at 11 a.
m., and the finish Is at the Y. M. C.
A, Fourth and Yahralll streets. The
course has been changed In Portland,
making the even 13 miles come to the
west end of tbe suspension bridge
here.
A. handsome permanent trophy cup
will be given by Rodney Gllsan to be
held for one year by the winning
school and to become the permanent
property of the first school winning
it three times. A flag will be pre
sented to the winner of each relay. 1
The race will be started by Mayor
Caufleld, of Oregon City, who will send
message by each team, said messag
es to be received by Mayor Lane, of
Portland.
SUMMER NORMAL
OPENS ABOUT JULY I
Arrangements are being made by
Superintendent Zlnser for the open
ing of the Clackamas county summer
normal, which will occur on or about
July 1. The Y. M. C. A. building
where tbe term was held last year,
has been engaged by Mr. Zlnser for
the same purpose. The term will last
six weeks and will close a few days
previous to the semi-annual examina
tions for state and county certificates
which will be held In August. In ad
dition to himself Superintendent Zln
ser has retained as instructors: Pro
fessors L. A. Reed of Parkplace and
T. J. Gary of Willamette.
Superintendent Zlnser Is also pre
paring tbe papers and making ar
rangements for the annual school
meeting which occurs on June 17. At
this meeting, all business will be
transacted and officers elected for the
ensuing year.
P. R. L. P. COMPANY MAKES
BIG LEASE TO W. P. & P. CO.
A big lease was filed in the office
of County Recorder Ramsby Friday,
from the Portland Railway, Light &
Power company to the Willamette
Pulp & Paper company. It provides,
In short, for additional water power
for tbe paper company in addition to
its present 14,000 horse-power.
The lease is for 47 years from Jan
uary 1, 1908, and includes the site
of the company's mill A property part
of Moore's island, and such rights and
privileges as runways, bridges, pipes,
etc., necessary for the paper com-.
pany in the conduct of Its factory.
The lease is for such excess of
14,000horse-power as may be neces
sary to produce the full catalogue pow
er of all water wheels now installed
by the paper company under all avail
able heads of the Willamette river,
and also the full catalogue power of
four 42-inch McCormlck water wheels
and two 36-inch McCormlck water
wheels, under all available heads, al
so two 48-inch that may be Installed
at Mill A, Moore's Island; provided
the use of one 36-lnch American, one
35-inch Victor Register Gate and one
27 1-2 Inch Victor Register Gate
wheels be discontinued; and provided
this excess power shall not be avail
able when there Is a head of less
than 30 feet.
The paper mill is to pay 50 cents
per month per horsepower.
The ground lease cover3 40,000
square feet.
