e OREGON CITY ENTERPRISE FHDAY, JANUARY 4, 1907. VOTE A FIVE-MILL SPECIAL ROAD TAX After Much Opposition County Judge Dlmlck Receives Special Levy. , County Judge Dlmlck was out at Boring Thursday for the purpose of holding a special road tax levy meet ing In that district. A five mill tax vas finally voted but It was only after much discussion and fight between the farmers and lumbermen of that district. The lumbermen have always been opposed to the levying of a special tax, saying that the county ought to keep the roads in good shape and whatever is done on thorn is good enough and there is no need of a special tax on the people. VETERAN COLLEGE HEAD TO RETIRE Dr. Thomas M. Gatch, president of, the Oregon Agricultural College,' has been elected to receive, at his option, the privileges of the Carnegie Founda tion for the Bid of Teachers. This implies that Dr. Gatch is to receive a retiring allowance of $1000 a year, payable monthly, whenever the presi dent sees fit to retire. The Carnegie Foundation for the Aid of Teachers does not allow teach ers of state or denominational schools to be placed on the list, and therefore persons from such institutions are not eligible to the fellowship and aid of the fund, but a ruling was secured In behalf of Dr. Gatch on account of bis long and eminent service. President Gatch gave his intention of retiring next June from the presi dency of the college and the regents have secured this gift of appreciation. From the information at hand it ap pears that Dr. Gatch can, by retiring, take advantage of the allowance be ginning January 1, or he may select any future time in which to do so. Dr. Gatch's proposed retirement from the presidency of the college is of his own election. Though he is still hale and hearty, and one of the hardest workers in the faculty of the Institution, he wishes to be rid of the intricate and onerous duties that characterize the complex institution of which he has been the head for the past ten years. Many members of the board have urged him to remain in the institution in a professorship, but he has not signified any purpose of doing so, even should a place be officially tendered him. His record as an educator will cover a period of 51 years when the coming Spring is reached. It was in the spring of 185G in the mining districts of Cali fornia that he began, and every year from that time to the present he has been actively in the business. He was graduated from the Ohio Wesley an in 1855. DAMAGE SUIT OP ROSWELL VS REED In the damage suit of Boswell vs. Reed, both of Estacada, the latter, Mayor J. W. Spces, a former resident of this county, whose home was near Linn's Mill, has placed himself in a , peculiar position by warning an em I ploye who was working for him in 1 Portland, against the police, i Mr. Speos is a member of the plumb ' Ing firm of Speos & Smith, 2C9 Pine j street Hardly had Police Sergeant ! Jones and Acting Detective Tiehenor 1 left the plumbing shop, whore they i were seeking an employe for whose arrest a warrant had been Issued, it is alleged, when George E. Spoes sent a messenger to notify the man that i the police were after him and he hnd' better make his escape while he had the chance. I As a result the police have failed to lay hands on Arnold Delshnelder, ' for whom they were searching. Thai the man heeded the warning said to have been conveyed to him by his em ployer, the police say Is shown by his dropping his tools and leaving the house where he was working, j John Ashenbrenner, aged 15 years, who was sent to warn Delschnelder, las alleged, was taken to police head I quarters shortly after noon, and ad Imltted that Spees had hurried him to ithe place where his employe was work ling to let him know that the police were looking for him. Deputy City Attorney FiUgerald was notified of the circumstances, and after a brief conference with Police Judge Camer on, announced that a warrant will be Issued this afternoon for Spees' ar rest on the charge of contempt of court When the plumber Is taken before the Magistrate the charge may be changed to that of being an acces sory after the fact to the crime of as sault and battery. Complaint was laid against Delsch neider by " Sadie Weston, a woman who lived In the same house. She al leges that he picked her up during a quarrel and threw her violently to the floor. Jones and Tiehenor went to 2C9 Pine street to serve the warrant. They were informed by Spees that his employe was plumbing a house at 42G Everett street Though Spees may be prosecuted for contempt of court, there Is some question as to whether he can be punished for becoming an accessory after the fact to the charge of assault and battery on the woman, because the detectives did not inform him of the nature of the offense for which Delschneider was to be arrested.
