STRANGE ADVICE!
Will Enlarge Depot
Workmen have begun the work of
remodeling the Southern Pacific pas
senger depot in this city.' The old
building, which has seen service for
a great many years and is of inade
quate capacity both in the freight and
passenger departments, will be ex
tensively remodeled and enlarged, but
will occupy its present site. This im
provements in line with several im
portant changes that have been made
this winter by the Southern Pacific
company to its depot grounds in this
city.
WouldBe Costly Investment
There is one question pending be
fore the voters of the state that will
receive a practically unanimous nega
tive vote in this county, in which the
promoters of the scheme did not cir
culate a single petition asking for the
submission of the question. That is the
plan to have the state purchase the
Mount Hood and Barlow Road, for
$24,000. For the state to purchase
this road means that the people of
Clackamas and Wasco counties will
have saddled upon them about 30
miles of mountain roads that will be
exceedingly expensive and. difficult to

Heinrich, according to information, left
Portland a few days ago on the O. R.

go to bed. When the train arrived at

Fish Warden Makes a Catch
In dragging the Wilamette river
Monday near the Falls in this city,
Water Bailiff W. M. Dutscher found
a string of twenty fine salmon that

pending a delivery in Portland or
other convenient market. The fish
were confiscated by the fish warden
who shipped the salmon to Portland
where they were sold, the proceeds

A Statesman representative came
from Portland on the train yesterday
afternoon and was forcibly reminded
that Marion County candidates are not
up to the game of political campaign

the style of playing it in Clackamas

my faith in Doan's Kidney Pills is

I could not get any relief at all. Hav

In asking for the nomination and
election to any public office, it is ex
pected of a candidate that some valid
reasons be assigned showing that he
is deserving of the recognition that is
asked.
In seeking the nomination as County
Recorder on the Republican ticket, E.
P. Dedman is not without reasons.
Mr. Dedman is a farmer and fruit
grower residing near Clackamas. He
has for 28 years been a resident of
Clackamas county. He is a man with
a family and as a taxpayer has con
tributed and now contributes his pro
portion of the burden of maintaining
the county government and for that
reason is directly interested in con
ducting the affairs of that office in an
economical manner with due regard
to efficiency.
Mr. Dedman is thoroughly acquaint
ed with the details of the Recorder's
office, having served a deputyship un
der former Recorder, T. P. Randall.
For thirteen consecutive years, Mr.
Dedman has served the people of his
community as school clerk and with
that exception and his experience in
the Recorder's office has never held
an office of any kind.
For a number of years Mr. Dedman
has been prominently connected with
the I. O. O. F. lodge, having passed
the chairs and has since served the
Clackamas lodge as secretary for-the
last five years. He has been twice
honored with the principal chairs of
the A. O. U. W. order, and for a num
ber of years has been a member of the
Grange in the work of which he has
always been actively interested.
Mr. Dedman 's qualifications for the
office to which he aspires have never
been questioned. He is competent and
deserving and enjoys the fullest meas
ure of confidence-among the people of
Clackamas ! county with whom he has
a wide acquaintance.
Mrs. Mary S. Howard, state secre
tary of the Patrons of Husbandry, has
prepared an official list of the Granges
entitled to send representatives to the
State Grange, which meets at Albany,
May 22. The jurisdiction of the state
extends over 17 counties. There are
95 granges and 5440 members. -
The following are 'entitled to repre
sentatives, according to the report of
State Secretary Howard:

The report shows that the
Grange will contain 33 representativ
es; Some of the Granges have lost a
few members but interest has been
manifested everywhere in lecture pro
grammes and literary contests. Sev
eral Juvenile Granges have been or
ganized for the young people this year.
This is a branch of the order that
will be pushed.
One of the principal items of busi
ness that will come before the State
Grange will be legislation, which in
cludes the tax bills to be voted for in
June. At most of the Grange meetings
for April and May these ,tax bills will
be discussed as a mattpr of education.
Election of officers will also be im-!
portant at the State Grange. The elec
tion makes the meeting - more im
portant than last year. The members
appear to be somewhat at sea in the
matter of state master. Mrs. Clara
H. Waldo, state lecturer, is the logical
candidate. She has said that she is
not a candidate, and prefers the honor
should go to some One else, but she
has not said she would not aecept if
the State Grange should elect her.
There is a growing sentiment among
the members that Mrs. Waldo will be
elected on the first ballot for state
master, and that the demand for her
acceptance will be of such a charac
ter that she wll accept. Oregonian.
