Savage's Celebrated Company Coming With 50-Piece Orchestra. - The most important society and operatic event in the musical history of Portland will be the Grand Opera Festival of three days, beginning Mon day, February 5, when Mr. Henry W. Savage's celebrated English Grand Opera Company and orchestra of fifty musicians will be heard for four per formances. ' . Opera lovers in Portland and sur rounding citties have been looking forward to this rare occasion ever since the first . announcement that Manager Savage would send this splendid organization to the North west. The company is famous as the largest and most expensive aggrega tion of artists, musicians and produc tion that has ever attempted a com plete cross-continent tour.. The sing ing forces alone number . over 150 people. To convey the snormous equipment of scenery, costumes, me chanical and electrical - effects, a special Grand Opera train of 14 coaches and 70-foot baggage cars is required. , The company itself is a combina tion of Mr. Savage's- "Parsifal" and .English Opera companies of last sea-1 son, there being over a score of prima donnas, tenors, baritones and bassos in addition to the great singing chorus of nearly 100 voices. The performances will be arranged as follows: Monday evening, February 5, "Tan-h&euser." Tuesday evening, February 6, "La Boheme." Wednesday matinee, February 7, "Lohengrin."
