6 OREGON CITY ENTERPRISE, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1905. HARVEST FESTIVAL SEPT. 23-26. How Citizens Can Help Work of Salva tion Army. Have you ever heard of a poor, troubl ed, sorrowful, perplexed hopeless man or woman appealing fruitlessly to The Sal vation Army? Do you know that some thins like 3,000,000 Just such people are upheld by this wonderful organization? Do you know that in twenty-three dif ferent homes fallen women are each year restored by the scores to honor and a life of useful purity? Do you know that in three different havens little children, all the way from nursling babes to sturdy boys and girls are being succored? Do you know that scattered over the country are seventy-eight Shelters in which night ly some 9000 homeless often hopeless, men or women are cared for? Do you know that these institutions represent but a mere fraction of the charitable - work successfully carried on by The Sal vation Army in the United Staates? How is this enormous expense to be met? Fools and ignorant know-alls ex plain to you that The Army is in and of Itself a sort of bonanza class-corporation, and of a truth it would needs be if out of its own resources it carried on the etupenduous undertakings it dares. But the intelligent man or woman of today knows too well The Salvation Army un der too many conditions and through too many seasons to listen to such folly. The Army Just now is making a spec ial effort to raise funds, and they are asking for not only cash but articles that can be converted into cash. "We append a full list of articles asked for: Fruits, flowers, canned goods, vege tables, fish, meat, chickens, live stock, corn, cocoa, books, pictures. Jewelry, coal shoes, wood, tools, breakfast foods, fur niture, old or new, clothing, new or sec ond hand; wheat, oatmeal, condensed milk, bread, crackers, cheese, tea, cof fee, flour, lumber, shingles, chairs, sheets, stationery, blankets, cutlery, dry goods, musical instruments. No religious organization of history, has depended more fully upon the good offices and charitable warmth of the public than the Salvation Army. Happily we are not an ungrateful people, nor a people slow to realize or appreciate great deeds. That is why we have a right to feel a sincere interest in everything The Salvation Army undertakes, and that is why we all now take an interest in the Army's approaching annual Harvest Fes tival, September 23 to 26. Anything and everything of any actual utility may be given as an offering at this Festival, for what may not be locally - useful may be of high practical value in less favored parts of The Army's field. There is. In fact, a saying, humorous, but true, that The Salvation Army can find good use both for people and things that no other body in creation would consid er. Remember the dates and remember the cause to be furthered; be generous and you will nurse no regrets. DROPSY Do Your Ankles or Limbs Swell? Are Your Eyes PuMy? We aro the Sola Agents for the Only Thing Known That Cures tho Kidney Diseases that Cause Dropsy, viz: Fulton's Compound. It Is now well known that dropsy is not In Itself a disease but is commonly a symptom of Brignt's Disease or Diabetes. Hence, up to the discovery of the Fulton Compounds, dropsy was Incurable. It is now, however, curable in nearly nine tenths of all cases. Here is an interesting recovery, to which we refer by permission. Mrs. Peter Goyheneix of 928 Fillmore street, San Francisco, became alarmingly dropsical. Her physician had finally to tap her every few days. She was tapped nearty forty times and grew worse from day to day. The physician finally told her husband that she had Bright'! Disease of the Kidneys, that it was in an ad vanced chronic state and beyond medical aid. Her heart also gave her the usual trouble and she was in such a serious condition the relatives were sent for. They put her on Fulton's Com pound. It stayed on her stomach, the first thing that had done so for a week. The second week the dropsy declined a little and the im provement was then gradual until her recovery was complete. This case was examined into by representatives of the San Francisco Star and the Overland Monthly, and the genuineness of the case and the recovery were fully attested in their columns. Mrs. Thomas Christol of 426 Twenty-seventh street, San Francisco, was also swollen with dropsy, as a result of chronic Brtght's Disease, to more than seventy-five pounds beyond her normal weight, and had to be moved in sheets and was close to death's door although she had four physicians. She was put on the Fulton Compounds. Three weeks showed improvement and in six months she was well, and permits this reference. There is only one thing known that will cure the chronic kidney disease that is behind dropsy and that is Fulton's Compound. Probably in no department of agricul tural work is it more difficult to obtain efficient help than in operating a dairy. Many farmers have been compelled to abandon keeping cows because help to milk could not be procured, as the average farm laborer dislikes a dairy. To operate a dairy successfully good milkers are necessary. It is a strenuous branch of agriculture and requires most careful at tention to details and regular intervals for milking operations. The farmer who conducts a dairy is an early riser and .generally works late hours. The average hired man despises milk ing. It is the first and last function of the day's work. It frequently comes at the close of an arduous day of toil in the field, and many hired men will not en gage to work on a farm where one of the duties wil be to work in the dairy. With bired laborers to milk who dislike to milk the cows soon go dry, or they refuse to pay any profit on the cost of mainten ance. The modern hired man wants short hours and easy service. Some farm belp demand the maintenance of a horse, and are more gentlemen of leisure than is their employer. The average farm employe wants Sun days to himself. To arise on Sunday morning on schedule time and milk a few cows and to be under contract to help milk the herd on Sunday evening is where the protest comes in. The cows need as cuch care an attention one day as another, while Sunday specifically is claimed by ordinary farm help as time reserved for themselves. In Germany, Belgium. Norway and Sweden and many other European coun tries, women do part or all of the milk ing, but to milk a cow is an accomplish ment that but few American women have mastered. The dairyman finds his busi ness every year more difficult to operate and In many cases he is compelled to change the dairy to some other system of agriculture. Cheese and Dairy Journal. Do You Remember? Oh, you that weep, choke back your tears. And rise up from your aching knees; New Joys are in the waiting years, New griefs to come supplanting these. Oh, you that weep, look back across The past that died an hour ago; What was the deep, soul-crushing loss That last year caused your tears to flow? S. E. Kaiser. SUMMONS. HEIFER The improved dairy breeds give . the greatest profit to dairying. Good dairy bred cows are seldom for sale, and the best way to get good cows is to raise them. Breed the best grade cows you have to a pure bred dairy bred bull whose ancestors have high record milk and but ter production, and with this line of breeding you will increase the annual yield of the herd to greater profits. As you grade up and improve the herd, keep ing the heifer calves to replace the cows, each cross is nearer the full bloods of higher value, and in a few years you will grow into a pure bred herd. An ex change says: "The happy combination of quality and quantity is what the dairyman is look ing for when he is buying a cow. There are cows combining these two properties to an astonishing degree, and these ten dencies are strongly hereditary. If we have a cow that gives an extra large per cent of butter fat her heifer calves are very apt to take after her in that respect; likewise if she Is a big milker in weight or quantity of milk. Who has not, heard of or known a strain of ex tra milkers that originated away back years ago from some old black or brindle cow of unknown breeding? These good cows seem to have inherited a milking Quality. The saving of the good, well- APPLICATION FOR LICENSE.
