OEEGON" CITY ENTERPRISE, FRIDAY, JULY 21, 1905. SCHOOLMA'AMS CAPTURE FAIR. Teachers From Several State Attend Fair and Are Objects of Much At tention. PORTLAND. Or., July 18. While not officially so designated by the depart ment of special events and entertain znent, this has been schoolma'ams week at the Lewis and Clark Exposition. There have been schoolma'ams of high and low degree, of youthful and uncertain age, 'and they have seen and enjoyed the Fair and everything appeataining thereto from the art display to the shows on the Trail The schoolteachers came for the most part in parties, as successful contestants in various popularity contests. The first to arrive were about 25 from San Fran cisco, sent by the Leuben-Weinstock Co., and they were accounted exceeding fair to look upon. On Thursday a party of thirty, guests of the Boston Herald, hail ing from all parts ef New England, ar rived for a several days' stay. Included in the party was one teacher who has devot ed fifty years to her profession, and two others who can claim nearly forty years in the harness. The New England wom en confessed that they had expected to find Oregon somewhat of a wilderness and were surprised at the marvelous progress which the western country has attained. . They were enthusiastic also In their praise of the Fair, being espec ially delighted with its Ideal setting. A party of nine teachers, from Illi nois, who came Friday, were preceded by a. story printed in a morning paper to the effect that the young women had broken many hearts in Butte, where they stopped over for a day and went under ground in two of Senator Clark's mines. The story which Portland swains read In the paper on' the morning of the Illinois teachers' arrival, was to the effect that six of the nine had received proposals of marriage, and that one. Miss Christine Kenny, had been proposed to by a man with half a million to his credit. The influx of doctors coming to at tend the national convention of the Am erican Medical society began a week ago, and continued for several days, the doc- j tors with their wives and families ar riving In long special trains which near ly swamped the capacity of the railroad yards. There were in all between 1500 and 2000 registered, and the number brought into town by the convention was In the neighborhood of 5,000. It was the biggest gathering ever held on the North Pacific coast. The association adopted a resolution favoring a "universal health bill," one provision of which should be for a new cabinet division to be known as the Department of Public Health, with a Secretary of Health at its head. The weather continues to be a source of wonder to eastern visitors and of great satisfaction to Portland people. There has been so far, but one hot day, and that was not hot as summer days In eastern cities are hot. Every day for weeks has been sunny and clear, with a refreshing breeze, while the evenings are delight fully cool. Besides the free attractions, Kilpat rick, the one-legged bicycle rider, makes two daring rides daily, one down a steep flight of steps, on his bicycle, and the other up a steep ascent and down again in an automobile. The exposition is pay ing Kilpatrick $500 a week, and the peo ple think he is worth the money. .The night admission to the fair is 25 cents instead of fifty cents as during the day. In the evening througs of people gather at the Exposition to listen to the band concerts and take in the shows on the Trail. There are excellent fire works displays twice a week, on Wed nesdays and Saturdays. The night illu mination of the Exposition has been made particularly effective by the laying out of the grounds. While the main exhibits palaces and the state buildings are lo cated on a table land overlooking Guild's Lake, the water feature, the Government buildings are situated on a peninsula, -which juts into the lake. The view of the main picture from the Government Pen insula, or of the stately palaces, as all the buildings are outlined in frosted lamps. NOT ENTIRELY A SUCCESS. PORTLAND, Or., July 19. Man tried again yesterday to conquer air. It was the same old story of partial defeat. He must try yet again before he can slip the metaphorical harness upon the atmos phere and make it serve him as the giants Steam and Electricity have been brought to serve. For nearly two hours yesterday after noon the airship Angelus hovered over Portland and vicinity. To the casual ob server it looked like a great bird moving slowly across the sky with ease and per fect control of itself. In fact there was a. battle going on every second; a battle against a strong wind which has proved theevil genius of airship inventors since the first. Every inch the brave vessel moved to the southward was an inch to the credit of the contending elements. It is noteworthy, however, that the Angelus bucked the capricious air currents yes terday with a greater degree of success than any previous air vessel. Captain T. S. Baldwin, of California, the inventor, is satisfied with yesterday's showing. He will make some alterations and pit his vessel against the wind at once. He has no doubt but that his boat could 'navigate in any direction under favorable atmos pheric conditions. He Intends to make it sail under any conditions. NOTICE OF SALE.
