Oregon City's " growth during the year "1904 was constant and in the aggregate amounted to a very nat ural; expansion of the city. -Thert was no boom. But instead there was an incessant building of new houses and these are improvements of a permanent and durable character. Exclusive of the. very extensive and costly improvements that were made at the paper mills, there has been a great deal of other building and im proving in the business and resi dence districts of the city. NotS alone to building operations has the growth and improvement of the city been eonfined. A number of finely graded and improved streets,., be-, sides Hew and additional sewer dis tricts, stand for the expenditure of a considerable amount of public money. A growth in the city's pop. ulation is proof that this enterprise has not gone unrewarded. All in all, the year of 1904 has been a pros perous one for the people of Oregon City and Clackamas county. In fact it has paved the way for a larger and more general growth along all lines that is certain to attend the holding of the 1905 Exposition at Portland. A DRINK OF WATER. Why It la a Good Plan to Take Omm Before Breakfast. tu the morning the stomach contains a considerable - quantity of mucus, spread over and adherent to its walls. If food enters at this time the tena cious mucus will interfere to some ex tent with the direct contact between . the food and the stomach necessary to provoke the secretion of gastric Juice. A glass of water taken bt-fore break fast passes through the stomach into the small intestines in a continuous and uninterrupted flow, it partially distends the ' stoiuach ; it thins and washes out n.-ost of the tenacious mu cus; it Increases the fullness of the capillaries of the stomach directly if the water is warm and indirectly In a reactionary way if it Is cold. Care must be taken not to take cold water when the circulation, eitber local or general, is so feeble as to make re action iniprobable. We should not risk It in an -advanced 'age nor In the feeble, whether old or young, not should it be taken in local troubles tike gastric catarrh. In these cases It is best to give warm or hot water. The addition of salt is very beneficial. London Fam ily Doctor. If Quail Are Scarce, So Are Turkey. "I don't, know whether you ever no ticed it, but it's a fact Just the same that whenever we have a year In which quail are scarce the same Is true of tur keys," said a prominent meat dealer the other day. "Prolonged wet weath er in the spring or In the early summer is fatal to younj? quail and turkeys alike. Both are extremely tender, and the weather has much to do with their successful rearing.
