Teacher Deoiln Employment at Pre vailing Wages. With the opening of Ihe School year generally at fur Monlay. or, at the lut eal, the week following, boarda nf di rector, of twenty of the lis school dla tricta In Clackamaa county, have been unable to aecure Instructor at the pre vailing aulurlea that are being ald In Ihla county, reported Ihe Oregonlart cor reapondenl laal Monday. Thla condi tion does not dlscloae any great scarcity of Instructor, although teacher are not aa plentiful now aa In previous year, but la conclusive evidence of the unsatis factory wagea that are being puld' leach era. The average wngea paid female In structors In the Clackamas county school, a ahown In the recent annual reHrt of Superintendent Zlnser, la $36. Sit while male teachera are receiving an average (alary uf only $44. At theae meager salaries It I next lo impossible to supply the smaller district of Ihe county with leaching force. The larger dlatrlcta of the county, which are able lo pay from $G0 to $75 per month, are eagerly sought after and the place are taken early In the eaaon, but no end of trouble la experi enced In aecurlng Instructor for the smaller school of more limited meana. The refusal of teachera to accept em ployment at the wagea being offered I certain to result In stimulating the sal aries. Present indications are that Ihe opening of the achoole In a number of Ihe rural dlatrlcta will have to be post poned until the search for teachera can be further prosecuted by the interested school boarda. The growth of a community and the success of Its local Institutions depends entirely on the loyalty of It people. It I well enough to preach "patronize home Industry," but except the service given at a home Institution equals that of out-of-town enterprises, thla argument car ries no weight and 1 entirely disregard ed, as It should be. But with Oregon City people It Is different. A few months ago E. L. Johnson established the Cas cade Laundry. It is equipped with the latest Improved machinery ana la dally turning out work that la equal to any and superior to much of the laundry work that I being; done In Portland. Being a home institution and furnishing employment for many Oregon City peo ple, It la enjoying an Immense) patronage. The high standard of the work being done commenda It to the general public.
