PAGE 8. OREGON CITY ENTERPRISE PRIOAY, SEPTEMBER I, 104. : General Mews t t While out walklnu with a gentleman friend yesterday morning. Mr. M. I Pfouti saw A large Cougar In the Levens hop yard just west of town. Tht ani mal took fright when the men awroached and ran Into th Umoer near by. Several men went out with their dogs and at tempted to track the bin cat. but their efforts were unsuccessful!. Cougars are plentiful In the Coast mountains, hut are not often ivn In the alley. The last one seen near Pallas until yester day, was killed by City Marshal J. M. Grant near the camp ground fifteen or twenty years ago. Polk County Observer. The Rosoburg Plalndealer reports a Josephine County man who has an or chard of ten acres of apphs that yields him a lot of money each year; In the winter he takes out all kinds of gold beneath his orchard, and when he gets enough apples and (told, he amuses him self with catching salmon from a stream with which he Irrigates his orchards and waslies his gold. Great country, this. One of the McFarland boys, living on Fifth street near the river, had a pet bear, but now bruin is no more. l-ast Friday he pulled the stake around which he circled for the past year and went to seek other pastures. An alarm was rais ed and as no one was willing to met the bear In the open and try to effect his capture, a rifle was brought and bruin was laid low. Numerous efforts had been made to dispose of the bear but without success. However, his meat sold readily at 15. :0 and 25 cents a pound and netted Its owner a neat sum. Grants Pass Courier. SUMMONS. In the Circuit Court for th 8tats of Ora gon, for the. County of Clackamas. William D, King, Plaintiff, vs. Carrie E. King, Defendant. To Carrie B. King, above named defend' ant: In the nam of the Stat of Oregon you are hereby required to appear and answer the complaint filed against you In the above entitled suit. In the above named court, on or before Friday. August II, 19(4. the same being all weeks front the first publication of thla summons, and you will take notice that If you fall to so appear and answer said complaint, the plaintiff will apply to the Court for the relief demanded In said complaint, to-wlt: That the bonds of matrimony now exist ing between you and plaintiff be dis solved. ' Thla aummona la published by the order of tha Hon. Thoa. F. Ryan, County Judge of Clackamas County, State of Oregon, la the Oregon City Enterprise, a weekly newspaper published and printed and of general circulation In Clackamas County, Oregon, for aiz successive and consecu tive weeks, commencing Friday, July I, 1904, and continuing to and including Friday, August II. 1904. GEO. C. DROWNE1X. Attorney for Plaintiff The cascara balk season Is about over, though some are still pealing in the coast counties. The price this year has been 6 and 5.1-2 cents. Ijist year it soared to 17 1-2 cents which proved a great stimu lus to the cascara bark peeling business. There was distributed In the cascara growing district for the bark last year approximately 1300.000. Though the price has been only one-third that of last year, the industry has been the means of the distribution of considerable money this year. Activity in the cascara bark business the past two years has given rise to speculation as to how long it will hold out. Ever- time the bark is taken from a tree, it means death to the tree. If the tree is of any sixe it Is cut down before the work of peeling begins. In this way all the . trees from two to three inches In diameter up to the largest ones are disposed of. Only the very young trees are left. It requires about nine years for the young trees to grow huge enough for profitable peeling. But scat tered through the woods of Oregon, and Washington are enough cascara trees to keep peelers busy until the young trees on the this year's work are large enough to peel. The largest trees are not over 1! inches in diameter. Independence Entrrpri.-e. NOTICE OF FINAL SETTLEMENT.
