PROGRESS OF THE WAR.
Japanese Meet Sever Loss. Report Not
Confirmed.
Another week. In the war, of many ru
mor and few facts. At thia writing the
report that 30.000 Japanese and 1800 Rus
sians were killed In a battle on the forti
fications of Port Arthur lacks confirma
tion and probability. If such a battle
bas been fought It would rank with some
of the notable ones of history. At Hohen
llnden, the French loss was only 20,000,
the Austrian 6000; at Inkermann the
Russian 9000, the allies 2500; at Chancel
lorsvllle, the Union 16.000. the Confeder
ate 11,400. A loss of 30,000 men also ex
ceeds those in the battles of Petersburg,
Shlloh. BpottHylvanla, Cold Harbor, Fred
ericksburg, Chattanooga and Bull Run.
But it Is the concensus of opinion that
the news of a Port Arthur disaster was
given out by the Japanese themselves to
mislead General Kuropatkln. Notable
successes have marked the Japanese. ad
vance against Kuropatkln. On Friday,
July 8, after severe fighting, the town of
Kalchou was taken. On July 14th, ac
cording to reports from Toklo, Tlnkow,
to the north and west of Kalchou, was
occupied. The-next point In the line of
advance Is Ta Che Kiao, and upon this
place the armies of Oku and Nodzu are
moving cautiously, while Kuroki threat
ens Kuropatkln from the northeast One
hundred and thirty thousand to 180,000
men a vast army are Involved in the
movements, and, since the Japanese are
apparently undeterred by the heavy rains
and muddy roads, either a great battle or
a Russian retreat appear to be the proba
bilities of the Immediate future. On sea.
there have been no events of Importance.
Considerable Interest lies In the fact that
vessels of the Russian volunteer fleet,
presumably laden with coal, have passed
through the Dardanelles Into the Medi
terranean, where they wait This gives
color to the supposition that the Baltic
fleet Is at last getting ready to sail for
the Far East. Such a move would be in
the highest degree spectacular, and
threatens to electrify the diplomatic at
mosphere in Europe, since France will be
under strong temptation to assist ber
ally by permitting, In violence of Inter
national law, these vessels to coal at her
stations on the way to Eastern waters.
Magnificent Menagerie with the Great
Floto Shows.
One of the pleasantest and most profit
able hours that can be spent anywhere
may be found In the enormous menagerie
department of these vast shows. There
Is not a great deal of opportunity afforded
elsewhere for a practical study of animal
life. The relations of the wild animals
of the world to mankind are but little
understood. The marvels of creation
are nowhere greater than in the strange
and diversified forma of animate exist
ence, aa exemplified in wild and untamed
and untamable beasts. Scarcely any Idea
of the greaj. cardinal principle of progress
in animal life evolution may be hail with
out a knowledge of wild animals. The
wine men of the world know this fact,
and In order to make such knowledge
available, as well as to entertain and
amuse, have established In the larger
cities of the world xoologlcal gardens.
But they are enormously expensive Insti
tutions, and only the wealthiest commu
nities can afford them.
It la because these great shows make
one of the many features of their exhi
bitions a menagerie that la complete in
every particular that they are of Incal
culable practical benefit to any and every
community they visit. Years of study
of xoology in books la not so effective as
an hour spent in this menagerie. And
when during this hour one may be
amused by the antics of the monkeys,
marvel at the strange creatures of odd
shapes and savage disposition, and at tha
same time be entertained by the music of
a magnificent military band, an hour of
diversion and study is supplied that can
be had nowhere else.
It Is for this reason that the doors of
the shows are opened an hour before
the beginning of the arenlc performance.
It is really a duty to get to the shows
early enough to allow the children ample
time to see all the animals, and an bour
Is none too long for a hasty Inspection
of them all.

Local Crop Conditions.
Clackamas county experienced the sec
ond severe frost of the season last week,
and consequent damage to tender vegeta
tion Is reported. The hay crop, although
a trifle short, but above the averug In
quality, was harvested without mishap,
and this tends to dispel the general fear
that the market price of hay and oats
will be extremely high this winter. There
are other reasons that Justify this con
clusion. As a cereal, the oat crop will
be practically a failure, and much of this
grain will be cut for hay, so that the sg-
I gregate harvest of this product will be
fully up to that of a full crop. The value
of beef and other stock has depreciated
wonderfully. For this reason farmers
will be disposed to feed their oat hay to
their stock, which will not Interfere with
supplying the market with the usual
tonnage of timothy, cheat and clover. The
rain of the latter part of last week was
of some benefit to late sown crops.
