In killing these animals, Antone Jlabclt, a prominent calllcmun of the limine iiclglilioi bootl, is believed to hold the, record. Hlngle-handed mnl alone, Mr. Habell one day laal week killed thiee of thesa animals. One of the cougars measured ten feet m. length. The growth of the cattle-ralalng Industry in this county la suppoHcd to hn the main reason for the Irii ieiiseU number of thtae camlvorous anlmuls that have been troubling cattlemen for several months. Made Good Showing. The Oregon City hoso team took second money in every one of the contests In which It was en tered at the firemen's' tournament that wmi held In connection with the, Mnrdl Gras carnival In I'ortliind last week. Home of the I'ortliind papers g.ive the local tram the worst of the deal In reporting the races In that It waa stated that the Oregon City boys made a bobble In the principal events and because of which they were unable to achieve a victory. The races were witnessed by many Ore gon City people, whose reports refute the claims made by the I'ortliind news paimrs. There was nothing to It save that the Astoria team, being better trained, was a little too speedy for the Oregon City lads, who hope with the ad vantage of faithful training in the seve ral weeks that Intervene, to give the successful Astoria team an Interesting contest for nrst place In the races that Will be held at Astoria during regatta week In August. Crop Summary Inning the paat week the rainfall In the eastern sections of the state bus hern ample, and In some limited ureas it hiis been excessive, and attended by high winds and hall, which have dune rtitielili'iiiMc ilauuiKi' to the crops lying within the tint ka of theae aloinis. In the western section of the stale drought tiinlinuea and no lain of conseiiucnce haa in i iiiri d since June 2. except In some of the coast counties and In the high level stt tltins of southern Oregon, wheie local ruins have fallen and greatly Improved late i mps. Fall wheat la tilling nicely ami lis harvest will heroine general thla week. lull hurley Is ulsu maturing and promises to yield above the average. Karly sown spring grain la ripening and a fair crop will be hnrveated. Late sown spring wheat In the Willamette valley Is very poor; some of It hus already been cut for hay and some will not pay to cut ven for thla purpose. Good rains within the next few days will help some fields of lale sown spring wheat, but most of it Is too far advanced to be benetltted. and this part of tjie wheat crop, which, for tunately, comprises but a small propor tion of the whole, Is considered a failure. Oats ure heading short and yields below Ihe average crop are expected. Corn is doing fairly well. Pasturuge Is drying up. Stock generally keep In good condi tion, but there Is a falling off in the flow of milk among the dairy herds. Haying Is nearly finished, and the crop, although light, was secured In excellent condition. Hops, potatoes and gardens are uneven; where ruin hus fallen they are doing will; where drought prevails they are from poor to good, depending upon their cultivation and the capacity of the soil for retaining moisture. Peaches are be ginning to get ripe and a fair crop will be picked. The cherry season Is drawing to a dose, and the yields were much better than expected. From S. P. and C. E.
