OREGON CITY ENTERPRISE, FRIDAY APRIL 29, 100-1. 6 Canby. Mr. Ferry's father-in-law, Mr. Miller, died last Saturday from the effects ol cancer from which he had suffered (or a long time. He bed bad it removed by a anrgeon once or twice hut could get no relief. Interment wag hftJ in Zion cem etery. J H Adair, of Canbv. died very sud denly of heart disease on Thursday even- j ing. He was Uken to filvertoo for bur-1 ial. He was a meson of long standing and leaves a wife and two eons who have the sympathy of the people of Can by in their sorrow. Charles T.ckleson. Sam. Fhegley and IMiis Mayer, who have been with the teaa. shovel in Southern Oregon, re turned Tuesday. There is much speculation here as to whether fruit has been injured by the cold weather. Last rrulay nigni wan A. Ic was froxen in several places and sotce plants that were well along were kiueu. Bessie Armstrong, of Macksburg, vis ited Canby Tuesday. Jacob Smith, our rustling butcher, is at orient occupying K. Zoloers building on the corner. He will, however, occupy Henry Knight's new building when it is completed. TU. n.l,lt.11r,-e IrultTA. of Canbv. will have work in the initiatory degree next Friday evening. After that they wil proceed to celebrate and have general good time. Lunch will be served. Ci gars will be in evidence and much ges ticulating on the part of enthusiastic peakera will be indulged in. The railroad steam-shovel retorned to Canb? on Tuesday evening. They have a full "crew of men and are expected to operate in the Canby gravel pit during the summer. Mr. Pbegley has just finished giving Mr. Rydmaa'a new house a nice coat of white paint. Henry Knight has had the old butcher hop and bis wood shed torn away and aet carpenters to work building a nice, new and commodious building on Main street, SO by 30. Dr. H. A. Dedman is contemplating building a nice residence od his property that he but recently bought here in r.nK. Hs nsna live acres and a nice bouse will be a great improvement to the town. Tbe citizens of Canby are all catching the spirit of improvement. Houses are being built, paintirg is being done and orenl fences are being renewed. Lvery- thing goes to show that Canby is moving forward. Sufforil Tti unfortunate yoong man who was HmvnHl near Oswego was buried in what is known as the Fapenburg barying ground on Sunday p. m. He leaves a iln hut no children, we believe. Her maiden name was Mary Boherg and she livwt near Wi sonville. vve near tnai aha i lffi in comfortable circumstances, finanrmlly. as he was insured to the amount of $6000. It appears that he was subject to epileptic flu, as be bad a num ber while nunting or usuiuK, rtnrt ha was very fond, but always be- ir.ro rnmniniooi were with bim who wrvrkKd over him till they, brought bim back to lile, and it is supposed that be was taken with one o! them ana leu isce down in the water unable to help him self, as there was no water in his lungs, bowing that be did not die byslrowning. He was 41 years old. Mrs. Beihle, accompanied by Mies Ida 6licksser, drove to town with a load of potatoes Saturday and sold tbeno for $1.25 per Back. Men, to work, except on their own E laces, are as scarce a tbe proverbial en's teeth. There in no floating population in Staf ford, therefore it behooves the women to do and dare, thereby winning greater honors than Joan-of-Arc. Mr. Whesltie goes to Albany to preach the fourth Sunday of the month. Mrs. T. L. Turner, who has been in poor health since the holidays, is some what improved. Tbe past week has been cool, blustery, rainy, and Friday night there was quite frost. We cannot tell yet if it baa in jured fruit or not. Don't plant silver maples. Tbey are nice looking, trim-built trees, taking on naturally a pretty shape, and when in fall leaf with their ceasles rnstling and whispering they remind one of theaspea, very companionable tree but when a few years old they begin to be aggressive and take tbe ground, sending up shoots in everp inconvenient place, catching the clow for rods around, and in tbe fall shed ding such a mass of leaves. So don't plant silver maples, nnless on the other man's back forty or on a timber claim in tbe desert. Two monarcbs of the forest which bave withstood tbe blasts of countless winters were felled last week and Jakie Schattz is fast converting them into stove wood with bis gasoline engine and saw. They were in Mr. Powell's pasture. Mr. Powell, the postmaster, bought a new milk cow and her calf of the mail carrier for $35. Speed of Blrda. Frequently arguments artee as to the ipeod with which wild birds fly, and many men of science bave sought to determine something about 1L Natr rally It is lmpoKSible to fix tbe record made by such birds as grouse, quail and enlpe when tbey first arise, but It In safe to say that tbey are not going one balf as fast as the luckless gunner who misses them Imagines. With tbe migratory fowls of known fast flight. such as ducks and geese, something more nearly accurate Is known. The green winged teal is about the speediest of them alL It does something like ninety miles an hour as readily as a sparrow dives into an inviting rain spout. The canvasback is only a trifle Blower, probably elgbty-flve miles being its limit while the black duck, mallard and redhead fall below this, being timed at about eighty miles. Still this Is plenty fast enough to insure Iota of misses unless tbe fellow with tbe gun looks down tbe rib straight snd pulls the trigger at the right time.
