Vobti.asd, Oregon, March 17. The
Republican primaries in Multnomah
co intv yefteiday reunited in an over

It was a titlal wave. The defeat of ex- ;
senator Simon and hie followers was so
overwhelming- that they will bo able to ;
make but a meaner showing in the ,
county convention next Saturday. Out
of a total of 12 delegates to the conven-
lion the Mitchell faction (regulars) will
have at least 110, and Mr. Simon (inde-1
pendent) less than 20. Complete returns j
hu.l hen rm-eived lt niaht liom all the ;
58 precincts in the city of Portland, and i
all hnt four of tbe 25 country precincts.
In the city the Keijulats will have 81
delegates and the Independents 11. In
the country the Regulars will have 29
and the Independents four. The pre
cincts of Columbia, KiUaver, Reedera
and Bertha, with a total of four delegates,
bad not been heard from last nittht.
The regular ticket was successful in
carrying all the ten wards of Portland.
The Independents made the best show
in the Fourth Ward, where they got
a total of four delegates. The Regulara
carried every precinct on tbe East Side
of the river, with the partial exception of
precinct 44 whete they lost one delegate
out of the three. 8. C. Pier has the dis
tinction of being the only Independent
candidate from the city who will sit in
the Republican Couuty Convention in
the territory east of the Willamette river.
Of the 58 precincts in Portland the Inde
pendents were successful in just six, all
on tbe west aide of the Willamette. In
the country they swept everything be
fore them in St. Johns and Trouidale.
They have high hopes of making a show
ing in the four precincts yet to be re
ported. ... ....
Th total ReDuhhcan vote in the city
was 11,888 and in the country 1673 (ex
clusive of several precincta where the
fiaurea were not sent in) makiDg a grand
total of 13,561. This exceeds by nearly
6000 votes the total vote cast for W. J.
Furnish for governor in 1902, when hie
aggregate was 74S1, and is greater by
35tk) votes than the aggregate count for
McKinley in 1900, when tbe Republican
presidential candidate got 9948.
The total registration in Multnomah
county was 18,392. Tbe Socialists and
Democrats who held their primaries at
the same time with the Republicans in
the city, did not attain a greater aggre
gate than 600, ot which aooui iw iter
given to tbe Democrats and less than 2t 0
to the Socialists. It ia obvi-us that
many membeas of these two parties took
a band in settling the Republican dis
pute. Thete were no contests in any of

A few minutes later Willie returned, and

A New England school-teacher recited

work except one little fellow, who hesi
tated, then at length raised bis hand.
"Well, Willie, what is il?" asked the
teacher. "Please ma'am, do you want

the story of the passenger and a guard of
an English railway car, wbo were having
a heated discussion over whether the
traveler should pay fare on a dog that
accompanied him, the guard insisting
that the rules of the road demanded that

and sarcastically asked tbe guard it be
would not require a fare to be paid for
that animal as well. The guard an

When Lady Constance Mackeniis, the
English beauty, was in Texas, she ac
cepted tbe invitation of a wealthy ranch
man to visit him. He determined that
her reception should be worthy of her
fame and qualities, so be telegraphed bis
manager: "Lady Mackenzie coming to
morrow ; make every preparation to treat
her royally." The manager had never
beard of Lady Mackenzie, but, as the
business of the ranch was raising blooded
horses, aa well as cattle, be decided this
must be some fancy racehorse. The
famous guest arrived the next day with
her party, and found all ready. A clean
box stall, with abundance of fresh bay,
awaited her.

Do You Want kitreufcrth?
If you want to increase your strength,
vou must add to and not take from the
physical. In other worda, the food that
you eat must be digested, aasimilated
and apprapriated by the nerves, blood
and tissues before being expelled from
the intestines. Kodol Dyspepsia Cuie
adds to the physical. It gives itreogtb
to and boilds up strength in the human
system. It is pleasant to tbe tasto and
palatable, and the only combination of
digeetants that will digest the food and
enable the system to appropriate all of its
health and strength-giving qualities.
