The beauty of the operation of the filtering system em ployed at the Oregon City water works was demonstrated last week during the heavy rain storms. In spite of the badly discolored state of the water in the river, after passing through the filtering sys tem the water drawn from either hy drant or fancet was perfectly clear and as nearly pare as a public water ser vice can lurnish. In the operation of the system tbe water is first conveyed frorn the river into two tanks of 40,000 gal lons capacity each. The water is thence carried to the filter tank, where it passes through about four feet of sand and fil tering screens, in coarse of which all sed iment and imparities are removed, and is emptied into a cistern having a capac ity of 66,000 gallons. For a complete city water system, Superintendent How ell thinks Oregon City's plant is not equalled in the state, and his conclusion finds confirmation in the faultless condi tion of the city water during the entire year.
