"Whnt Is this'" "Only a medicine," I replied, mid with a perhaps unworthy satisfaction I watched blm hold It up to the light, look at It all round and finally remove the glass stopper and then take a good sniff. The fake humorous speaker hns an easier career than cveu the fake elo quent speaker. Yet nt any given din ner the orator who passes out mere elo cution to his bearers has a success al most as Instant and splendid as bis clowning brother. It la amazing what tilings people will applaud when they bave the courage of each other's Inepti tude. They will listen after dinner to anything but reason. Tbey prefer alo the old speaker to new ones; they like tbe familiar taps of bumor, of elo quence. If tbey bave tasted tbe brew before, tbey know wbat tbey are going to get. The note of tbelr mood Is toler ance, but tolerance of tbe accustomed, the expected; not tolerance of tbe novel, tlie surprising.
