The present legislature has emicted more laws favor able to the laboring people than any of Its predicessnra, slid the people who have fjllowed the measures closely through the Imo-e and senate know tint Senator Urownell was always a warm champion of siiih bills and was instru mental in securing their p:i.-s:ige. No a'tempt was m ide to sidetiack any jn-t lain r bill, and 1: is an undisputed fact that either the speaker of the house or the president of the Senate could have killed, or at any rate greatly retarde-', these measures by referring to nnfriendU committees. Senator Brownell as a re publican, fathered the initiative and refer, dnutn when it wag not looked upon as a thoroughly republican measure, but in the state convention of 1900 it was made a part of the platform, and sub;e orient convention and legislative as semblies have endorsed and ratified trie action until now it is looked upon as part of republicanism. The labor leaders who are raising this uproar against Sen ator Urownell should not overlook his recoid during the many years of his serviie io the senate, as organized labor hag always had in him a warm and con sistent friend. The laws to which the labor leaders of Oregon City profess to feel so much attached, fixed eight bouts aa a day's labor in the state and if the people re ready for this departure, it can readily be accomplished by the ini tiative. In the mean time personal abuse of a man witb Senator Brownell' record is unbecoming and highly un called for. Albany Herald. coiiiponing ttie new hoaru ol trade wliu.ki met III the 1 llice cf Hon." At the above mentioned meeting ia the judge's ottice, the matter of expense was carefully discussed and it is the pur pose of the promoters of the move to sea to it that expense are kept at bed rock and the peoples money will be made tu go as far aa conservative rare will per- ' mit. In discussing the subject of ma terials and coats it was the opinion of all present that three inch planks can las lam over a space of eight feet in width at the cost of one thousand dollar per mile aud what is still better it was thought that these planks can be kept in a goo I state of repair for ten years at least, no. withstanding the adverse opinion cf some Portland contractors.
