Maryland Republicans carry the

publican candidate for governor may
reach as high as 75,000. The entire re
publican ticket is elected by large ma
jorities. Eight of the nine members of
congress are republicans.
Missouri Republicans elect one mem
ber of congress. Democratic majorities
are greatly reduced, however.
Montana The republican candidate
for congress is given nearly 10,000 ma
jority. Republicans will have safe ma
jority in the legislature.
Oklahoma Both side! claim the con
gressional race. Republicans claim the
legislature by majority ul 7.
Michigan Bliss, the republican can
didate for governor, has a majority of at
least 33,000, although he ran behind his
ticket. The republicans have large
majority in the legislature.
Nebraska Republicans elect the gov
ernor by 5,000. The republican! gain
three members of congress. Democrats
and fusionista have 29 members of the
legislature.
Nevada Fusionists elect nearly the
entire state ticket. The fusioniat is
elected to congress by only 1,000.
New Hampshire The state goes re
publican by about 9,000. The republi
can loss is about 0,000.
New Jersey Democrats made gains,
but republicans elect seven ont of ten
congressmen, and retain control of both
branches of the legislature.
Ohio Republicans get the etate and
ten ont of 17 members of the legislature.
Pennsylvania The republican candi
date for governor is elected by R5,000.
Of the 32 members of congess, 13 are re
publicans.
South Dakota Republicans carry the
state by 20,000 and elect nearly the en
tire legislature.
Utah Republicans have the legisla
ture by at least 39.

On the eaut side of the river the stakes
of the survey run back from the river on
Center street through Oak (irove, tnd

further eastward. It is said very posi
tively that the Southern Pa-ific Railway
Company will certainly bridge the Wil
lamette river at or about this point, so
as to bring in the west side division on
the east side track, and thus avoid the
heavy Krade oat of Portland on the west
side. There are several very high
trestles, besides the steep grades, that
are costly to maintain. The ohject is to
avoid the heavy grade and these hiifh
trestles. Just when this bridge will be
built is not known, and all that is known
is that the preliminary surveys have
been completed.

current issue of bis school journal, Mr.
Z.nser says:
"Never before was it so difficult to se
cure teathers. General prosperity in
every line of business seems to be the
cause. This is true not only of Clacka
mas county but of the entire state. The
fact is, all other lines of activity are of
fering better inducementH, and the cost
of living has been increased to such an
extent that teachers can no longer afford
to accent the meager salaries many of
our smaller schools can offer. Clacka
mas county has had resignation after res
ignatioa this summer. Many of our
best teachers are either going into other
lines of work or thy accept better sal
aries elsewhere. Said one of our best
teachers, who gave op bis position as,
principal, recently: '1 am now working
in the harvest-field, and as a common
field hand I am making $8.00 more per
month than my school board offered me
at an advance for next year. And really,
I work shorter hours, with less responsi
bility, and it does not take any "pull" to
get a job, either.' Another whom the
superintendent asked if he were not
ready to take a school again, remarked :
'Well, I guess not; I am only a beginner
in stenography, and even so I am doing
better than I ever did teaching. Why, I
have a friend who is a carpenter, and not
much of scarpenttr, either, and lie is
making $35 a month.'
And the illustrations could easily be
multiplied. As school officers and ci;i
zens, we are confronted by the fact that
the entire industrial situation has been
changed. All lines of work have devel
oed wonderfully and are offering better
inducements, especially to men, hile
the salaries of teachers are where they
were ten years ago. The average salary
for men teachers in Oregon is $-U.4tj ; for
women, 35.53. For Clackamas county
it is even worse, the average salary for
men, including principals cf Oregon
City and the other larger towns, is $42.05 ;
for women, $32.4)5.
