Col'.NTV 111 MASK MoCIXTY! t he year just closing ha boon one ol the inimt aiicceaslul. The usual number of complaint about the abuse ol animals and neglect of and cruelty to children have been made, la every cane the complaint In been followed up with ttiorouKh investigation. Where the complaint wan well founded audi Btepa a were deemed wise have been taken. In nearly every case quiet tnaiuros are Hulll.'ient to nee u re a reform of the ahuae complained of and be Society ha re joiced that U ha not been neceaaary to Ifo father with Hie matter. The one accouipliHlitiient of the past year, to which we point with the neatest pride, ia the fountain w hich has been creeled on Main ntreet. The Society does not claim to have secured this alone ; its purchase was made poHHible only by the genernu aid given to ua by the Council of Oiegon City and by the co-op-ration of many good and kind friend. To these, one and all, the So ciety is under the cleepfHt obligation aud hereby expresses it gratitude. Without their help would nut now have the fountain. The only claim which we make is that it was ours to start the agi tation which ha ended no happily. The fountain i both a thiniz of beauty and a great good to the community. Its beau tiful proK)rtioti will always he a re minder of the beautiful purree ol the humane societies all over our country. It stand as the monument ol that which is bent in the city when its people cay, 'There shall bo no more abuse of dumb animals nor cruel treatment of children.' The children will see in it a uioat power ful object lesson and they will grow up to he the friends and pro tectors of the friendless. The sparkling water tvhicli it dispenses night and day w ill cool many a parched tongue. Per haps it may to a certain extent keep some from tasting drinks, the cud of which is drunkenness and bestiality, The good which audi a fountain accom plishes to a community can never he calculated. It I proof to every waylaring man that there is a determined society in Oregon City which U rrady to go to the rescue of child and lieaHt when ahued. Altogether it ia to be regarded a an advance step in the life of the city. We wish to take the opportunity, on this the occasion of our annual meeting, to thank the good people whose gifts aud interest have put the fountain where it stands, and we w ish to say that it is our hope in the not far distant future to place a fountain ou Seventh street.
