Cauipliell of the county central committee. The delegates were sealeU in alpliatietical order with Aber netliy in the front row. Chairman Campbell made an Intro ductory emech, advising a barmonious convention. I Kei-order Tom V. Kandall placed Hon A. S. Dresser in nomination for teuipor- : ary chairman. He was elected by ac datamation. He was escorted to tbe chair by Delegates Kandall and Hedges and was introduced by Chairman Camp- I bell. In taking the chair Mr. Dresser thanked the convention for the honor conferred upon him, and aeked for the further pleasure of tbe convention. E. C. Hackett, of Abemetliy, placed Franklin T. Untiitn ia nomination for temporary secretary. He waa unani- mously elected. I Upon motion of Mr. Wright the chair man was authorized to appoint a com mittee on credentials. Mr. Campbell moved that the chair appoint a committee on platform and resolutions. UKn motion the chair was empowered to appoint a committee on order of busi ness. Hayes made a rous ing addrees to the convention while the committee on credentials was deliberat ing, bis 8ieech was greeted with cheers and applause, lie paid a glowing trib ute to Lincoln. State Senator George C. Brownell was called and made a stirring address. He advieed an equally distributed ticket over all the county. His speech was en thusiastically received. He alluded to the promises made and fulfilled, and spoke of the work accomplished in the legislature. He challenged the opposi tion to show where tbe party bad neg lected to perform all the pledges made in the platform two years ago. He prom ised to work for an S-bonr-a-dav law and to endeavor to have ruilroad mileage re duced from four to three cents per ntile He spoke o( lie great honor and privi lege of being permitted to he an instru ment for the election of Senator John II. Nomination of road supervisors. Nomination of central committeemen. Before the noon adjournment of the convention, R. J. Scbuebel made a short talk. He said that he left tbe Republi can parly to go into the Populistic fold, but the pro mi sei reform was a myth and be was back in the old party and would support tbe ticket. The convention adjourned until 1 :30, when it reconvened. Some little timet was pent in readjusting the seats of the various delegations. A resolution, instructing the delegates to the state convention to vote for and use all honorable means lo further the candidacy of L. L. Porter for state printer, was adopted. The committee on platform made ihe following report, which was adopted ; platform. The Republican Party in County Con vention assembled, in Oregon City Clackamas. County, Oregon, March '.'fj, 1&)2, congratulates the people of tins county upon the general prosperous con dition of our.ymmon country, as Well as that of our own immediate v;cinitv'. We deeply deplore tbe untimely death of our well beloved 1 resident McKmle? , whose memory is endeared to the hearts of all citizens, and we hereby indorse tbe wise) statesmanship of bis tiia eeeor, President Roosevelt, in h'u effirta to carry out the policies so ably begun l y President McKinley. We endorse and commend the action of President Roosevelt in his efforts to control the trusts, and to seenre to labor an adeqnate recognition in its disputes with tbe capitalistic classes, and we here' y assure him of our cordial sym pathy and support. We indorse and commend tbe action of our national representatives in cham pioning tbe Nicaragua Canal Bill, the Mitchell-Kahn Chinese Exclusion Bill, and the bill to pension Indian war vet erans, and hope for ttie speedy pas-jge of all these measures. We demand constitutional amend ment for the election of United States Senators by direct vote of the peop'e. Believing, as we do, that all people should participate as far as possible in tbe making of the laws by which they are governed, we heartily indorse nd commend to the careful consideration of all the electors, the constitutional amendment known as the initiative and referendum, and urge upon all speakers and campaign workers to bring the mat ter prominently before the voters. We endorse the action of the memhere of the last legislature in supporting Hon. John H. Mitchell for the United States Senate. We commend the action of Senators Broanell and Porter and Representatives Kru, Talbert and Dresser for their eu port of what is known as the precinct assessor law, and the passage of tbe thirty days exemption law for the wane earners ol the State of Oregon, and t'teir action in refusing to raise county salui ies. We instruct the nominees of this con vention to both branches of the legisla ture, that if elected, they will make an earnest effort to obtain legislation which will cause control of the school text books by the State of Oregon and their sale to the people at actual cct. To obtain legislation by which a por tion of the State revenues may be rait-ed by a uraduated income tax and a gradu ated inheritance tax. To ob'ain legislation reducing- the pas senger fare in the State of Oregoa to three cents per mile. To obtain legislation constituting eilit hours a day's work throughout the Slate.
