grower in Oregon, since the retirement
'of the late A. J. Sawtell, and their prod
uct has acquired a wide reputation.
Mr. Saw ell was the pioneer in this in
dustry, and lound from his ai timl ex
tviience that teasels can he raised at i
profit-in Oregon. The soil seems to be
t, production of
; teasels. The qualities which go to make
J the teasel valuable are extreme lough
r. nea and elasticity, consequently a moist
climate is essential, and it is found that
J the teasel, when grown in an extremely
j 'dry year, is not of ai good quality as
I when grown in damp seuson. The

'as the "nap," a slight roughening of the
! fibers, giving to the goods the fuzzy ap
pearance so prized in woolen fabrics
To produce this slight roughening, there
has been nothing found yet so well
'adapted to the purpose as the tea-el
point. Efforts bare been made to man
ufacture steel points which would dis
place the tearel, and while for the coarser
grades of g Kxls a ateel point Is now nsed,
yet for all the finer fabrics the teasel
oint has not been displaced. The tea
sel headi are fastened to cylinders, and
then over the rapidly revolving cylinders
the woolen goods are passed The tip
of the teasel point is allowtd Merely to
touch the goods, and thus is produced
; the roughened appearance. It is found
' that the point of steel cannot be made
perfectly smooth, while the teasel point,
even under the highest magnifying glass,
is entirely smooth. If a fine cambric
needle is examined under the micro
scope, it will be found rough and jigged

The mat ket for teasels seems at the
present tune to be a permanent one.
Many tons are imported yearly by Eng
land and Germany, and used in the
manufacture of the finer grades of woolen
cloth. American manufacturers are us
ing large quantities of steel points, but
only in the manufacture of the coarser
goods. j
About the only two varieties of tearels
grown are the Oregon and the New
York. Of these the Oregon variety is
the smaller, but its deficiency in size is
counteracted by its superiority in qual
ity. . Some jeais eno the market de
manded a large teasel, but at present
the small burr is as acceptable and even
preferable. Larger prices are being paid
for teasels 1 inches in length than for
those measuring 2 inches or more.
According to the opinion of expert',
the soil upon wliich teasels thrive best
should be a heavy clay or clay loam, and
well drained. The more thorough the
preparation the better. Teasels are
s iid to do best when following a crop of
corn or beans, rather than a grass crop.
The effort is made to give the ground
clean intensive culture the season pre
vious to growing teasels, so that all
! weeds may be destroyed. The teasel is
j a biennial, and occupies the land for two
H' aeons. The first season the plants at
j titin a growth of from 15 to 18 inches,
