SUDDEN DEATH.
Charles T. lllckmnn Sustains Apopletlc
Stroke Sunday.
Oharlos T. Hickman sustained a stroke
of apoplexy at 7 o'clock Sunday morning
and died about two hours later. He had
been In failing health for some time and
his sudden death came as a severe blow
to his family and friends. Mr. Hickman
was well known in Oregon City.
Tbe funeral was held Tuesday after
noon from his late residence on the hill,
under the auspioos of the u. A. R. and
United Artisans, of which the deceased
was a member.
Charles Thornten Hickman was born
at Norwich, Ohio, March 3, 1843. He
enlisted in the army in 1861 and served
until the end ol the war. For his many
acts of bravery he was made First Lieu
tenant of Company B, Thirty-ninth In
fantry Volunteers. In 1805 he was mar
ried to Amanda L. Moore at Laplato,
Mo., and together they came to Oregon
in November in the year 1S71. They
moved to Oregon City in 1872, where
they have since resided. He has been
connected with Mead I'oat No. 2, alnre

the Portland Flouring M'lla Company.
He la mrvived by a wife and the follow
ing children: Mr. It. J, Ilcaley, of

chant and waa mayor of Portland in

"Among the
numerous enterprise
with which ha haa been connected, that
which iirobably haa been ot the widest ;
benefit to Oregon, eiecially Portland j

building of the lock on the Willamette
in 1872. Prior to that time goods bad
been first tranaferred from one side of
the fall to the other by teams, and later
by mean of a tramway or incline plane,
connecting the lower part of the falls
with-a basin built on the east side ol tbe
river. Both of tt.eaa means were ex
pensive, beside occasioning a great loea
of time. Mr Goldsmith and bis as
sociates, aided by a subsidy of f JOO.OOO
from the State legislature, undertook
the construction of the locks: but the
contractor failed, and they were com
pelled to complete tbe work by t be ni
sei ve. Its final cost wa more than
double the amount appropriated by tbe
legislature.
"But his troubles did not end there;
the People's Transportation Company
refused to nee the locks. Tbit forced
bim to build boats, and he organized
the Willamette Locks A Transportation
Company, which reduceJ the transpor
tation 50 per cent below previous ratea.
Tbia brought about the consolidation of
the People'a Transportation Company
and the Oregon Navigation Company.
In order to compete with this organisa
tion It was neceeaary to build newer and
better boata and also to establish a line
ol steamers between ' Portland and
Astoria. Ultimately he waa forceJ to
sell out to bit rivals at a great loss. He
waa tbe only loser, however, for in the
Willamette locks, which will endure aa a

In the matter of the estate of N. 0.
Walden, deceased, the executors are di
rected to pay 72 Interest upon tbe mort
gage Indebtedness of tbe estate to Henry
Mitey.
Otto II. Miller has been appointed
guardian of Edward A., Willie 0.,
George II., and Lillie A. Miller, minors,
and his bond fixed at $2000.
Wo. H. H. Blaney has filed an action
against Mary E. Blaney asking for a de
cree of divorce. The couple were mar
ried at Baltimore, Md., on April 12, 1870
and in May, 1899 Mrs. Blaney deserted
her husband without eufikient reason.
Attorney C. H. Dye is preparing the
papers in the appeal of tbe case of Mrs.
Gibbons vs. Strong. The plaintiff, who
formerly conducted a boarding house
known as "The Cottage," sued Strong in
the justice court for $38.50 on an unpaid
board bill and obtained judgment for $22.
Mr. Dye is Strong's attorney.
Louina E. York has filed a suit for di
vorce against W. II. York. They were
married iu Mayville, Gilliam county,
Oregon, iu May, ISM, aud York aban
doned his wife in 1899. The following
children have been born to them : Henry
11. York, aged 15 years; Albert J. York,
13 years j Eva York, nine years; Min
eiva York, seven years; Edward York,
six years, aud Maud York, two years.

Winnie Duffy, aged 19 years, was com
mitted to the iuBane asylum Wednesday
by Jud)?e Ryan. The girl's parents re
side near Scbubel and she came here
about two weeks ago and has been work
ing in C. W. Bagly's boarding house.
Bagly was the only witness and Dr. Carll
pronounced the girl insane. She was
taken to Salem Wednesday evening by
Sheriff Cooke.
The Washington National Building,
Loan and Investment Association, a cor
poration haa commenced action against
Geo. W. Stryker, Ola M. Stryker, J. A.
Barker and M. J. Barker, his "vile, J. W.
Didier and Duller, his wife, to recover
the turn of $1000 with interest from
March, 1SD5. In December, 1S92, Geo.
W. Stryker purchased 10 shares of stock
in the association and gave bis note,
which was secured by a mortgage on
block eikiht in Sell wood's Addition to
MilwHukie. The other defendants claim
to have some interest in the property.
Martin Giesy has tiled complaint
against J. DeVore Johnson and W. C.
Johnson, her husband, to recover $2,000
on a promissory note, with interest from
February 16, 1900, and the further sum
of $153.34 as taxes for the year 1899 ; and
Aha fuither sum of $138X6 as taxes for
the year 1900; and the further sum of
$.50 attorney's fees and for costs and
disbursements of suit. The plaintiff
asks that a mortgage on blocks 50 and 51
in Oregon City be foreclosed, except on
lota 5 and 6 in block 50. As Charles
Heinz claims a lein or interest iu the
mortgaged property, he Is made a party
to the suit. John W. Loder is the plain
titl's attorney.
