6,000,000, instead of the normal 19,000,
000. The loss represents deaths in con
sequence of the famine.

Senator Kyle, of pooth Dakota, Is dead.
Fire in Huntington, West Virginia,

reservoir were dry and all the engine
in town were out of repair.
There is little change in the steel
workers strike. Both sides are confi
dent. The steel workers believe they
will union re trust mills. President Mc
Connell says the atrike is won arul that
machinist are returning to work.
A special from Ottawa says: The sec
retary of state, acting for the minister of
customs, baa issued order to Custom
Transit Officer Busby, at Skagway, di
recting him not to ii.sist on the display
of the British flag contrary to popular
feeling there. He had no orders from
Ottawa to hoist the flag.
The Chicago owner of the Pacific
American Fisheries Company were noti
fied of the closing of negoiiationa for the
transfer of their plant to the promoters
of the Pacific Canning & Navigation
Company, the propped salmon trust.
TheCnicago people refused to go into
the deal, except on a straight sale.
They named their price and it was ac
cepted. The Pacific American Fisheries
Company was organized In WM with a
capital of 15,000,000. The combination
will include some 30 companies and will
control nine-tenths of the salmon-packing
business of the Pacific coat.
Hot wave is unbroken and intense
