The chief I sue In the campaign has
been the granting of franchisee to the
j street-car companies of the city. These
will all expins soon by limitation, and
the terma of extenaion are lobe settled
during the next two years, Harrison
baa in . former years made a record
against the granting of lojig franchisee,
and he and all of his followers claimed
throughout the campaign that the re
publican nominee was inclined to grant
long time privileges. This the republi
cans denied with great energy, making
their campaign on the flaws they picked
in the record of Mayor Harrison and
saying that Hanecy was no more die-
posed to favor the street-car companies
than is Harrison.
Hanecy was the nominee of Uie Re-'
publican machine, which is dominated
by e-Congresman William Lorimer,
and this fact cost him many rotes in the
rank and file of Uie party who are stoutly
opposed to their party machine and all
of lU works. The democratic- following
of ex Governor Altgnld was against
Harrison.

seems to have betrayed their confidence.
A. H. Humphreys A Co. have been for
some years conducting a warshoafe on
the river bank in Malem and another

limited amount of grain. For a month

there wa quite a shortage la the

the exact facts could not be ascertained

Two breweries in Portland and one to
Vancouver have a big fight on their
bands. Labor unions in all tbe Pacific
coast cities have been ordered to boy
cott the Weinhard and Gambrinus brew
eries of Portland and the Star brewery
of Vancouver. This bids fair to be one
of the bitterest fights ever waged in tbia
part of the United States between em
ployers of labor and the united laboring
men who are members of organizations.
It bas been charged that tbe brewers
in Portland and Vancouver paid lower
wages thau any other like institutions la
the entire country, betides making their
employee work longer hours. This re
sulted in a recent demand for shorter
hours and better pay. The brewers re
fused to accede to the demand and the.
beet informed persons believe they have
made a mistake. The Federated Tradee
Council of Portland, by a rote of 55 to
13, declared a boycott last Sunday night
that extends to points where tbe beer of
the "onfair" breweries is sold. This
figbt will be of sufficient magnitude to
attract considerable attention.

The difference of cost between a
good and a poor baking powder
would not amount for a family's
supply to one dollar a year.
The poor powder would cost
many times this in doctors' bills.
Royal Baking Powder may cost a little
more per can, but it insures perfect,
wholesome food. In fact, it is more
economical in the end, because it goes
furth cr in leavening and never spoils
the food.
Royal Baking Powder used always
in making the biscuit and cake saves
both health and money.
You cannot, if you value good health, afford
to use cheap, low-grade, alum baking pow
ders. Phey are apt to spoil the food; they
cloendanger the health. All physicians will
tell you that alum in food is poisonous
