Tub independent reformer are learn ing that the democratic party never fuses with anything that it doeen't expect to absorb. Tii Eh x ia one thing that is absolutely certain about the report of Aguinaldo' death, and that ia, he ia either dead or he isn't, one or the other. A Chicago man tried to drown hia landlord in order to avoid paying bia rent. Talk about drowning your troub le ; what i the matter with this? Mr. Clivklamd wanta the presidential term made longer, forgettfbg, perhaps, . . . . ! that there was much quiet rejoicing in certain circles that bis last term waa no longer Ir those officers, who captured an in nocent bag-hunter in Dakota, nnder the mistaken idea that he was one of the Cudahy kidnappers, were compelled to eat Crowe, it would be a little tough. Nobody know the troubles of a coun tryeditor. Juet a Mr. Bryan is on the ve of issuing the initial number of the Commoner, Aguinaldo throws op his heels and dies, and Mr Bryan's saluta tory will hye to be entirely revised and are-written. Paul KuuGhB is coming to America in February to biake an appeal to Presi dent HcKitiley for aid. Mr. McKinley might (five him the same kind of assist ance that Kruger bos been giving his country for some time get out of range of the bullets and pray. IicssLL Sa'Jk Bays Mr. Cudahy didn't 3o the right thing by the public when be acceded to the demands of the kid napper and gave up 125,000 for his son. When it comes to a choice between an only son and $5,000, it is an easy guess as to what your uncle Russel would do. Teutons who have promised to pay their subscription to The Commoner, in wood, will please brinu in the wood, as there is every indication that the winter in Lincoln will be long and severe. The grinding hand of empire is already be ginning to be felt. Alas my country men 1 Bryan'a Commoner. Now that Aguinaldo is really dead, the 'Settlement of the insurrection in the jrhilippines should not be a remote con tingency. Aguinaldo was the head and front of the whole movement. There is no other native in the AVohipelago, who possesses his intelligence and general ship to take his plaoe and continue the otrife. Kdmi'No J. Jambs, a professor in lb Chicago Unlverlty, ha discovered tht there never was but one genuine Instance of death from snakebite. Look t that now. Tub boogy man ha been seen over in eastern Oregon. They call it "tba kan garoo man." They say the creature ha the shape of a man. but i of enormous sixe and covered with hair. He i sui posed to eat miner raw without any salt, and has been seen to jump from one mountain peak to another, all the while emitting blood-curdling yells, and spouting sulphurous flame from hi nos trils. What kind of whiskey do tbey sell over in that country anyway? Cl'BA AM) THE I'MTKU STATES If the Cuban constitutional convention now assembled in Havana should adopt certain plans for future relation with the United States now under discussion this country would have no cause to accuse the island republic of ingratitude for past favor. The plan affirm an acceptance ot the Monroe doctrine, the establish ment of friendly relation with all nation and a resolution to regulate it foreign policy in accord with the wisbea of the United States. It proposes to put at the disposal of the United State a portion of any bay on the north coast, and of two bay on the south coast for naval aa tions, together with concessions sufficient in extent for the purposes of defense and sanitation. Finally it declares that Cuba will place itself on a war footing to help the United States, in case such assistance should be needed. Tbis plan accept tte ultimate author. ity of the United Sutea in foreign affairs, thus elimination the peril of an embroil ment between the island and some power which might threaten to draw this coun try into controversies. As much liberty to select harbors for naval purposes is conceded as would be desired if the is land belonged to this country instead of to the Cubans. One naval atation on the north coast and two on the south coast would be ample for all possible de mands. Least of all is the promise to place Cuba on a war footing when reeded to help the United State to be dismissed 48 inconsequential. This does not Bug vest that the tub.n army cr the Cubsn nayy may some time prove allies of strength to an American force, but that the technical status of alliance would be accepted. That would place all the bar bore of the island available for opera tions, refuge, supply aod communica tion, vt e nave cause lo know that to enter such a harbor as that of Santiago, behind even such obsolete fortifications as those of Morro castle, brings safety to a fleeing squadron. The Cuban constitutional convention is showing a disposition distinctly credit able to itself and to be welcomed by Americans. To some extent the action is taken under duress, but there is no reason to surest bad faith in it. The call for the convention virtually com manded the Cubans to bid for their free dora as liberally ae poseible by instruct ing them to define their relations to the United States in adopting a constitution which would have to pass approval in the United States before freedom was given them. The hid they are planning to make seems a generou one and prob ably will be so recogoized by the United States. Chicago Record. Drop in and try the finest barber chair in the city.
