O. W. Traylor, who resided on a farm
at Reaver Creak about two years ago b4
ince which time ha lived in Jackson
ville. committed a double tragedy at thai
place last Friday night that resulted in
the death of J. Hardenbrook and Ihw
selfdestrnction of himself.
The facta developed before the coro
ner's Jury are aa follaws: Q. W. Traylor
bad lived near Drain, Douglas county,
for two years past. He arrived in thia
place, with bis family two weeks ago.
His wife's sister, Miss Sarah L. Doeaonw
daughter of W, N, Beeson, of Hhn'r,
Clackamas county, came here with them.
Mr. Hardenbrook had been paying hi
addresses to her, and it I understood
they were engsged to be married. Mr.
Traylor objected to the marriage, and on
several occaslona threatened Mr. Har
denbrook' life. The day before the
shooting, . Traylor said Hardenbrook
would not Jive till Sunday, though he
gave his consent for him to come to th
hou-e to see Miss Beeson.
Friday night, at 11 o'clock, Miss B
son, Mrs. Traylor and others weresitlinic
around the stove, when Mr. Traylor
walked out on the porch to the house.
A tew moments Ister a ball came cra-ih-ing
through the window, and took eOVcl
in Mr. Hardenbrook's face about the left
eve. He fell forward in his chair but
was csoght by Miss Beeson, and sup
ported until assistance came from niijjkw
bors. He lived an boor but never spoke.
After the shooting. Traylor ran to "orae
old buildings 175 yards distant, anot
shortly after ahot were bearJ. Upon
investigation, it was found that be ha t
shot himself twice, the first taking effect
under the chin and tearing away part ol
the nose and face, and the aeeond enter
ing the bead above the nose and carry-
ng away ths greater portion of this or
gan. The men had never any dispute or per
sonal trouble of anv kind, and though
Mr. Hardenbiook had been repeatedly
warned of the th'eats tbat had been
made against him, he paid no attention
to them and seemed to feel in no dancer.
It developed during the examination
that Mr. Traylor had not been sound in
mind for the past year; that he saw
ttranite visions, and waa alnicled wiu
oss of memory. No valil rcison wasr
alleged for his antipathy to Hardenbrook
and there appears to bAve been no cause
why he should have had any dislike for
him. The shootinif. was no doubt thw
result of homicidal insanity, as Mr.
Traylor had d-clar d only a short Hue
ince that rather than Mr. Hardenbrook:
and Mios Beeson should marry, he would
kill both ot them. The alwve facta are
in accordance with the verdia of the jury.
Travlor was well known in this conety
and those bet acquainted with hLn state
he was a quiet law-abiding citizen.
