Wabhinoton, Aug. 8 Gravest ap
prehensiona are felt here in official cir
cles for the safety of the imprisoned
ministers in Pekin. The alleged state
ment of 1.1 Hung Chang that it ia abso
lutely impossible for the allies to enter
Pekin to escort the Ministers to Tien Tsen
add greatly to the strain of tbe situation.
It clearly implies the purpose of the
Chinese government to resist the ad
vance of the allies. So far as known,
there is no present purpose of calling a
halt in the allied movement against
P ik in. It is alno.y).'l that the
relhtf column 1 not strung enough to
maintain ar against the CLlnoae
Kingdom for any great length of time,
but heavy reinforcement are enroute to
China. Their arrival on th scene may
alter the situation entirely and bring th
Obstinate Orientala to their Sena.
Itia the presi-nt aitnstlon, however,
that worries the a1 ministration, and
there is general chagrin that it 1 not in
a position to enforce its demand nd
bring the Chinese aulLoritie tw instant
trms. Iu the coarse of the next two
month there will be about COOO Ameri
can troops on Chinese soil, not rouutirg
many thousands more that could be
transferred from the Philippines In case
of neceaaity. The Chinese will be beld
to a strict accountability for any injury
that may be sostaineJ by American in
terest in the present crisis. What
should be done for ths immediate relief
of the Minister ia the problem now con
fronting th administration, and ia the
aabject of anxloue conferences between
ths officials in this city and in telegraphic
correspondence with the Prea'dent t
Canton and ths KecreUry of State at
