Psah Ma. Yodeb: Your letter, to
gether with accompanying sample of
diaeJ potato, was banded me by your
brother some days ago.
The potato is initiated with one of the
Bic:t rerious disease that is found any
where in the world. Upon the leaves it
i Vuu n as late blight or mildew. When
it infecta the tuber it is moat commonly
known as dry rot. The eauw of the dis
ease is a fungus known as rbvtopthora
infestans. Upon the leaves the disease
usually app art in late summer, My
September, and causes the under surface
of the leaves to become mildewed and
the vines to blight more or less severely.
This mildew consists of innumerable
pore ol '.It fungus which, being washed
into the ground by the rains, germinate
and attack the potatoes causing the dry
rot that you have observed. The diseaM
can be absolutely prevented by the use
of Bordeaux mixture if ued at the right
time. Probably one or two applications
about the time the fall rains begin would
be sufficient in this climate. It would
.also be a good plan to sort out the dis-
aaoa.I notntoea to be ceitain none of
them were planted.
I was much interested in your account
of the sueceM you met with in spraying
for codling moth and would be pleased
to hear more definitely at what times
you made the applications.
Very truly yours,
A.. B. COItDLEY.
