OREGON CITY ENTERPRISE, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1900 8 EXrANSION. (Continued from page one.) Undo Sam's boys in blue kept liitn up nd I am proud to say I was one of them nd now he sores nearly from the rising io die Hotting of the sun. V J. Bryan, said in one of his petlius that McKitiley was inconsistent id commencing war with Spain for tiu- manitv's sake anl then murdering the ThilippinoeB, In the course of events in he war with Spain the Philippine Islands ame into our posjessions and the rebels lad to he corrected. If we did not we would be cowards in the eyes of other nations. I am thinking that William J, Bryan and Co. are the ones that are inconsistent. I think anti-expan-ion is gotten up for political buncombe and to humbug the people to get votes. Tho National grange at its last session failed to go on record in opposition to expansion. It is very safe to say that be anti-expansion element has very little support among the Intelligent fiatrioth farmers of the country. They anderstnnd well that in the commercial etrugsles for the possession of the mar kets of the world, the United States of America cannot afford to be idle. We are already producing a large surplus that must be marketed some where, or liard times and great suffering will come to our people. There Is but little ques tion that a very strong combination among some of tbe European nations are being formed for the purpose of shut ting out our products from their markets tli' soon be thrown open in Aia. The United Stales of America must main'.dn her right to enter those mar Lets even if she has to fight for it. It we should be forced in war with some foreign power, tbe possession of the Philippine islands will be of the greatest value to our own people. There is no question in my mind that the majority of the people will sustain the govern ment. No patriot will ask our soldiers to turn their backs to a foe when under fire. Our flag will continue to float over those islands so long as the interests of this country and the iaterestsof the in habitants of that country will be pro moted tUtreby and the government of the United States will decide when if ever these interests will be promoted by with drawing. We have always had the anti-expan eionists with us but their views have never been adopted by our people and - will not now, The people will sustain the Star and Strips regardless of the antis. I believs one should be broad and liberal in his views and that is ex pansion and anti-expaDsion will bring us in contact with men of all clashes and races and conditions and will awaken our sympathies and break down the narrow notions that grow np at home. The broader outlotk in the world diss! pates our prejudices and when we have eeen how other people live, looked upon their joy a and sorrows, we gain a new conception of the unity of the great system under which we live. As I quoted from the Divine writers of the Scriptures the Fourth of July, "for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given" and the government shall be upon his shoulder, ''Behold there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem, saying we have feen His star in tbe East." And I believe that star hovered over our Pilgrim Fathers when they landed on Plymouth Rock that we might become a mighty Christian nation. That star was with ieorgg Washington, Gen. Taylor, Lin coln, Grant, Shatter, Sampson and Dewey and it will stay with us as long as we battle for the right. We are bound to expand or decay and retrogade. It is in the very nature of all things and Providence and especially with nations. Welllmjst comment a little more on the Philippine Islands, we occupy a po sition of trust toward their inhabitants. The question is not, whether we shall let the Philippinoes govern themselves, but whether we shall allow a small por tion of them to misgovern all the reet. We have no right to abandon these is lands and their occupants to savage mis rule. We cannot afford to let a few po litical inconsistant misguided men keep us from taking a part in the Twentieth century that our position, abilities, necessities and the inherited aspirations of the people call for. There is no anti expansion about me. I would like to expand this all over the world forjl be lieve iu the brothei hood of man. There is no form of government in the world eo well adapted to the human race and o well calculated to develop the noblest sentiments of patriotimn and love of country as ours. It calls into being and cumulates into action a strong feeling of personal interest and responsibility. No injustice can be complained of, noarbi bitrary or cruel oppression, for the voice of the people frames the laws, liberty of thought and speech, freedom from the thrull of church it elevates, for which we reverently thank God as we worship him according to the dictates of our own onscience. It therefore must bo tha best possible medicine for female ilia. ltut some women inalov the mistake of thinking that they will try some thing else, simply because it is new. Po not therefore let any one persuade you to try some' thing which they Bay la just as pood. It cannot be just as frood. Mrs. Pink barn's Compound is the best, and there can be only one best. Doctored with several physicians in town and one specialist, but did not get any better. I finally decided to try your medicine, and wrote to you. After I had taken three bottles of Lydia E. Miss Lena Gaims, Visalia, Tulare Co., CaL "Before taking the Vegetable Com pound I was troubled with irregular menstruation, and suffered great agony. My physician gave me mor phine, and I remained in bed. I doc tored eight years and got no relief, and the doctors told me there was no relief for my trouble. Finally I tried Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. While taking the first bottle I felt that I waa improving. I have taken seven or eight bottles, and never had anything to do me so much good. Every month my troubles have grown less and less, and now at this time I am cured." Ella II'inset, No. 23 Stage Street, Haverhill. Mass. "I had dynHpsia for years.
