Ir the senate does not seat Quay no one will object very strongly. It has kept out just as good men and those that bad as good a right to a seat. Tbadi with the new possession of the United States has grown more than 100 per cent in the last year. It will con tinue to grow under American role. The decision of the overlap case by the supreme court of the United States settles the question of title to a large body of lands in this county. The rail road wins the case and parties buying from the road have now a good title. It is believed that the price of beef and other meats will decline. The top figure has been reached and from now on the price will go down. There is big money in the business at present prices . and good money at a lower figure. The rains in California have helped stock wonderfully in that state. A defeated candidate for road super v'sor and one too that has since been as sured by every member of the board that he was for this candidate cannot under stand why he did not get the appoint ment. It is easy, the clerk made a mis take, The board will fix it for you next time. Tub Oregonian dishes our friend Stevens, of Canby np in the following style. "At Canby, the public school was last week opened to a populistic and social istic lecture by a vociferous calamity howler. The supreme court and the government were duly attacked, while "socialism came in for an explanation, as did that much-abused word, anarchy." Blatant and unpatriotic ignorance ought to be kept out of school rooms." The president has secured assurance fromall the trading European nations that the open door will be maintainedin -China. This will put this country on the same footing as any other nation and pn account of better access we should get the largest share of the trade. The anti's think we should not engage in this trade that will bring thousands of dollars to this coast. Their idea is that we should get out of Luzon between two days and leave that island to the Tagals. Portland is securing ships as cheap as San Francisco and cheaper than the Sound. If Portland looks after her op portunities she will be a very important factor in the shipping business of this coast. The Kuesian government has agents now looking over the coast for the purpose of locating the terminal of a steamship line that shall be an adjunct to the great railroad of Russia. The next few years will see great develop ment on the Pacific, Portland should see to it that she gets her due. Tut growing importance of Oregon City as a center of public business is shown in the records of the land offlee and the increasing volume of postal busi ness transacted. The bill of Representa tive Tongue, proviJing for the appropri ation of ItiO.OOO for the construction of a 1 public building for the use of these offices at that place, is strongly sup ported by these records. The demands upon the government are so heavy at this session of congress, however, that the chances of securing the appropria tion asked are conceded to be exceeding ly doubtful. Oregonian. Tm democrats by fixing the box be fore diawing the committees got all they wanted on the committees that are to decide the Kentucky contests. Of course this contest will be a farce but the democrats by not shaking the box got the members on the committee that would do aa the machine toldtLerato. A democratic election board lias said that the republican ticket was elected now a democratic legislature will say that this same republican ticket was not elected if the machine can run tle party and it looks as if it would. This Is a re public. The county board has cut out ol the proceedings to be published the orders made in vacation. As these orders carry about $1200 of the peoples money and it cost about $1.13 to have them pub lished in this paper it strikes the Enter prise as poor economy. Not only should these orders be published but the pauper orders should show what pauper gets the money. Many people will ask for help if no one knows it, where they would not, if it were published to the world Then the people are entitled to know where their money is spent. The wider knowledge the better. Ex-Attobney General Geo. E.Cham berlais is credited with the following views on the question of fusion. "Well I think not. I believe the democratic party in Oregon had better go it alone next year and stand or fall nnder our own banner. We have tried fueion, have fought shoulder to shoulder with populists and silver republicans, and where do we find ourselves? With a complete disorganization ; with no party except in name; with the task be fore us of again building np an organiza tion, just as though we had never had a democratic party in Oregon." Evidently the unterrified are not lay ing awake nights scheming for the bene fit of the pops. t, noo vi 1110 ticcn. (A A iO. .O. Q. P. fg iS (ft Af Friday Januaty 5.
