"The Fillplnoa ahanduned us on the

the Ahalut river, near its aoiirce that
morning, and the Filipinos rafted ui
over. We then went down the stream
along a rough trail, guarded by a com
pany of Filipinos. That night we were
separated from Hue guard, and another
company, armed wiMi Manners, was pot

" 'I have ordere from General Tino to
shoot you all, but my conscience forbids.
I shall leave you here.'
"1 begged him for two rifles to protect
us from savages, adding that I would
give him letters to the Americans,
who would pay him well and keep him
from all harm. He refused this, bow
ever, saying he would not dare to comply.
Soon afterward he left with his company.
"We had seen some savages lo war
paint around us, and we prepared to
fight them with cobblestones, the only
weapons that were available to ut. The
next morning we followed the trail of the '

Americana came toward us, yelling.
One of my men shouted : 'They are on
us.' He was lanhing a raft of bamboos.
I, however, knew it was not the yell of
sivagea, but the yell of Americans. Tho
rescuing troops thought we bad Filipino
guards and called to us In English to lie
down so that they could shoot the Filipi

Lieutenant Gilmore could not speak
enthusiastically euouxh about the 140
, picked men who had rescued him
and his party.
"While we were in the hands of Gen
eral Tino'a men he issued an order that
any peison aiding an American by food
or money should be treated as a criminal.
One cilUen of Vigan, Senor Vera, was
probably killed for befriending us. We
would have starved but for the kindness
of some of the residents of the towns and
and some ot the Filipino colonels, but
others treated us brutally. Whenever
there was a prison we were kept there.
Where there was no prison they would
Iodize us in a convent. We suffered
greatly from want of exercise as well as
from lack of food."
For weeks Lieutenant Gilmore was
covered with boils, aud in great pain.
When the Filipinos found the Americans
were approaching, the treatment be
came better. There was a eignpainter
in the party and he painted advertise
ments on the rocks, throughout the re
treat with other emblems, like a skull
and the word, "Vengeance," by means
of which the Americans were able to
follow.
"The Filipino treatment of the Span
ish," said Lieutenant Gilmore, "was
brutal in the extreme. The Insurgents
had old grudges to wipe out against them.
Many talk about the reconcentrados in
Cuba, but I have seen Spaniards dying
at the rate of two or three per day of
starvation in the hospitals at Vigan. I
have seen Tagal otlicers strike Spaniards
in the face with whips and revolvers."
Lieutenant Gilmore declined to speak
regarding political conditions, except to
say that he thought the insurrection
would last as long as there were any
Tagalsleft.

Washington, Jan. 7. The navy de
partment today received the following
cablegrams :
"Manila, Jan. G. Secretary ot Navy,
Washington: Gilmore, Walton, Van
doit, Kllsworth, Brioolez, Anderson,
Peterson. Edwards arrived. Also
Farmey, Burke and Herbert, of the Ur
daneta, Only Venville unaccounted for.
Last seen at Baler, June 15.

pany years ago; but Its claims were con
tested by the government.
The main controversy was between
the Oregan & California road and the
Northern Pacific. The Northern Pacific
Company claimed the lands under an
earlier urant, hut it was shown that th's
road had not filed a map ol definite lo
cation, and thus failed to earn the grant,
Hence the court held that, notwithstand
ing the later date of the grant to the
Oregon company, it was entitled to the
lands. The lands involved lie south of
Portland and largely in the Willamette
valley. They embrace about 42,000
acres, and are saiu to be worth now
$5,000,000 or $0,000,000.
Like decisions were made in the cases
of Wilcox vs. the Eaatern Oregon Land
Company, and Messenger vs. the same
company. These controversies were al
so largely with the Northern Pacific
Company, in coflict with military wagon
roads. The decisions were also adverse
to the Northern Pacific In these cases.

handed down in the United Statos su
preme court today by Justice Harlan,
