neajy during the early morning. New of canned Inn-f, canned beans, bacon,
graves could be seen in places whi'ea1"'! hard-Uck. This is not much of a
few "g xkI nigger" lay where they had ! change from ti.eal to inal but we are
fallen. Acr.athe fields we could see ' generally so hungry that it alwavs tastes
trooien anJ chil lien making all haste to Kl. Sometim wewould eat break
reach tne next town of Polo. We, of . fast a' 5 a. in., then eat the next meal in
ci.ure, did not tire on them, although
there were some men among th-m.
After t rowing the bridge and advancing
alm jstS'iO yards, a line of skirmishers
a formed fur trouble ahead. We had
the evening. Kccause of the heat much
water is used, although it is warm and
not flesh, but it tastes mighty fine.
I send papers describing the big battle,
also a roll ot films. I supwe it would
not tone very far before the fight lgan, 1 do no goxl to send any more films now
tut it was not so severe as the one on
the day previous. We droe thetn from
one batik of eartti works to another until
near the outskirts of Polo, w hen we were
ordered to stop and go over to Malinta,
then the teuus.rary headquarter of
General Wheaton. We had driven the
insurgents aNut a mi'e and a half
further than was expected of us. We
took ei.ht rows of embankments that
liaJ been only recently thrown up and
drove them alxiut three or f iur miles in
all. Ii was nothing more or less than a
running fight, as the insurgents retreated
as soon a we would advance. They
could not sUi.d that terrific yell, which,
like the day before went with every
movement forward.
Three or four more men were wounded
including J. E Iwards, of "M" company,
another O. A C. boy. liis wound was
in the leg, and is doing nicely. Mean
time this place (Malin'a) had been
stormed and taken. Ttiis was one of
their strong holds and was very stiong'y
fortia-d. It was a sub headquarters for
the enecpy. The night before it (ell
Aguinaldo himself was here encouraging
tiis men. As we came in the lroo;.s
were fighting about a mile shea..).
Geoeral Wheaton and the hospital
liad temporary headquarters here. Dur
ing the afternoon seven dead men were
brought in while a great many wounded
or exhausted came in. Some of the
latter were just plain exhaustion, while
others ha I sun Ptroke and had to be
strapped down. All that night the
i'ht ambulances carried in new
men or on to Caleoocan The next day
the train was gotten tlcough and then it
took the sick and wounded into Manila.
The railroad has been tampered with
only slightly us the insurgents use it to
carry hack their women and clrldren
and goods. They are eo closely pressed
when they retreat that they have no
time to tear up the track.
April 1 Since the 2th we have been
in r.o fight, bjt the regiment has been
divided and is now doing guard duty in
different places and on the trains. This
morning two companies remain at this
place "I and B". It in very probable
that we will see no more fighting because
we have lost ho many men. Up to the
night of the 20th our losses amounted to
C2 wounded and seven killed. I do not
know if there has been any deaths or
tn re wounded since. This makea the
longest list of dead and wounded for
one regiment Hince this native war began.
The jieneralbure very much pleased with
our work li'it it is their intention to let
other regiment lose their fehare before
we again take the field, lint now that
all insurgent Htrongholds have fallen, in
cluding their capital we do not expect to
pee any more fighting as it is thought
that the "niggers" have given up hope
(about time.)
Have heard very little about the fall
of MaloloB except that there was very
little leeistance and that the city was
fired as they left. As they began to re
treat the cavalry was sent alter them so
as to confuse them and allow them no
reut or a chance to reorganize. Their
tiardeet fight was made oa the 25th and
20. h. Many prisoners were taken, in
cluding several officers. All of them say
thut liie natives are frightened and will
run every time a charge is made. (That
me taw.)
A duy or so ago the cLief-of-engineers
of the insurgent army, a colonel, was j Oregon.'
as they would not reach me here, but if
you think they would, send them, as I
want them very badly.
Now good bye ticf ire I make this any
longer. I.kx.

The busiest mightiest little thing that
was ever made is Dr. King's New Life
Pills. Every pill is a sugar-coated globule
health, that changes weakness into

We would therefore urge most earnestly
upon ow n rs of injured or fruitless tree,
not to become discouraged, but lo give
their trees extra care, by pruning otr in
jured limbs, rprsying, in. I most thor
oughly cultivating te soil, for they need
it much more right now than if in
healtiiy condition, tiood results is cer
tain to follow by the fruit Some of these
trees may yet bear this year ln-ing larger
and finer, and by reason of this extra
care such trees will start with renewed
vigor and reward their owners for (Ins
additional work with an abundant crop
the coming year.
Heverse are met with in all walks ol

should the fruit grower he exempt even

Oregon fruits are W ml ing favor in many
old markets, and with the new markets
opening up to ns, the demand is certain

10:.'!0 'or rst class irmt, ami suclt fruit cannot
be grown on neglected and diseased
trees. The tip-to-date fruit grower who
will give his best thoughts, care, and at

present, is sure lo win in the end, by
abundant crops and remunerative prices ;
hence we would say to all orchardists :
"Don't despair, don't get discouraged,
but keep on right along, as if we expect
