ON BOARD THE OREGON. (continued from first page.) "Flora" and "Beagle" came over and saleo the officers and crew of the Iowa. The program consisted of orcheetra, violin and mandolin music, singing, dancinc. club swinging and boxing. At the close the English officers proposed three cheers tor the Anglo Saxon alliance and they were given with a will. Then vre sang "Auld Lang Syne" and parted. When they sang, I thought of 1778 and 1812 but I didn't mention it. The English sailors are very friendly and say that blood Is thicker than water and that we are cousins, at least. I had a chat with one fellow and be said "you fellows aren't Yankees any more and we aren't Lime Juicers, we are all one familv now sand can lick the whole blooming crea- toon." Altogether, it was like a reunion after a few years estrangment sort of a blss and make up affair. The "Temeraie" that wasgoing to blow ass up when were here before has left fier hiding place, up the river, and is reparing to come down to the city. She never came out as long as the war lasted. Her crew are yery tender hearted and could not think of destroying the 405 lives on the Oregon, so they retired 'till the trouble was settled. Yesterday the .quarterdeck was decorated with flags and palms, the side awnings were spread and the quarter deck transformed into a ball room. At 2 p. m. a number of ladies and gentleman from the city and the officers of the various men of war came aboard and danced 'till six. An orchestra from shore furnished the music It made me homesick to bear the lively Jance music and see the pretty girls waltzing. Many of the Brazilian girls are yery pretty and graceful. The Englishmen will give a ball tomorrow evening and have invited as. The Celtic left on the evening of the 15th to stop the colliers at Puento Arenas, Chili, so 1 gases oar orders are changed again. I don't know where I will write from next, but expect to be at sea, Christmas, o remember me when you are eating Tour Christmas dinner. We can't get fresh meat at sea and as the supply ship 3 gone, now. my Christines dinner will be canned meat and hard-tack. News ii yery scarce here so we don't know how the affair with Spain is pro gressing. The educated Brazilians are very friendly to the Americans, but some of the lower class threw atones at the tnarinee, who went ashore on duty. The English sailors go ashore every night feat Lieutenant Noyers is very careful of our health, so we can't go ashore. The oiEce8 are of a different sort of clay I guess, for they go ashore to picnics most everyday. Lieutenant Everle says we will see Hong Kong before 'Frisco, and if this is true, I guess yon can expect to eee me about April 1901. Noy. 18--We have just got orders to sail for Cape Town and from there to Manila to relieve the Olympia. Fbed Oregon Agricultural College. fJorvallia, Oregon, December 20. The Kind You Have Always Bought Bears the Signature of THE II UJ II EST INTERPRETATION. Tho world of literature Is so vast that no one man rati nowadays claim Intl mate aimmlntanuo with all the best of its products or even all Its principal workers. The work of bhskHtare alone has engaged from time to time the almost exclusive study of many ripe scholars. Such a poet as Robert Browning, or a pro II lie novelist like Dickens, is analysed aud debated In legion of clubs. The question naturally arises as to how and whore a reader be come familiar with the spirit and works of those numerous great authors "whom not to know Would argue oneself tin known." Mover was the dilllculiy so fully and sat istactorily met as in Charles Dudley War nerVIJhaary of the World's Best Liters' ture." As a basis for Judgment we have heJe assembled all the boat fruits of liter ature, in every field, that authorship has given to us since the world began. To enable us understand and appreciate the spirit of authors we are furnished with In terpretatlveand biographical essays relat ing to a thousand of the foremost aud greatest. These are not mere trestlr.es by pedantic scholars. They are graphic por traitures and estimates by living masters of criticism, each of whom has made a special study of histheme. Here we find the historian Lecky giving his estimate of Gibbon; Lvslle Stephen depicts lor the reader his old friend Carlyle ; Prof. Ray Lankester writes of his own science- master, Darwin and Huxley, Henry James gives a critical monograph on Hawthorne; and so the series runs through all the list as if artists mighty with the brush were guiding us through a gallery of great paintings only that here the paintings are ot men whose works are immortal. In the same man' nor all the world's chief literatures sre sketched and interpreted for us by scholars who have studied and lectured on them as specialties In the highest universities. In every single Instance it is more snd better than mere interpre tationit is a resurrection of the author the work, or the literature.
