"Talking about oowa," Mid Audy Henderson, "I really think that I had one of tho most peculiar experiences with the animals in question that ever befell a citlsou of west Texas. It was soon after I went to El Ihtso, some ten years ago, and before I had got familiar . .h .ha vnirariea of the tA l"aso Cll- Ciate. "I had settled on a very pretty ranoh tonia miles out of the progresaive fron tier city aud was doing nicely until I decided to go into the butter business. J scut enxt for a duaen flue Jersey cowi aud began Derations. Well, the oowa came on, and I bustlod the butter busi ness from the jump. Thlugs progressed nicely for a uuuitb, wheu the weather grew very warm and the atmosphere very dry. The Rio Grande dwindled until a roadt could have waded across. Every bit of moisture disappeared, but this did not affect mo, because I had a flue artesiau well ou the ranch and plVnty of water. I observed, howovor, that my coa were lowing milk day by day, nntil at last they were perfectly dry. I was astounded, for they had plenty of feed aud lots of water from the well I couldn't understand it and determined to investigate. "I got op an hour before daylight and examined the cows, and, to my aston ishment, I found the udders of the cow heavy with milk. I did not milk the tho animals, bat simply watched and waited developments. Day dawned and the cows lazily meandered into the pas ture, and I followed. The sun came up, and with the sun came the terrible dry nesa, but it didn't fcaze mo in the least What knocked me out was the sight of my cows' uddors. They were growing smaller and smaller as I looked nntil they were as flaccid as a pnuctured tire. Then I tumbled. The dryness of the at fflosphere simply evaporated the milk through the walls of the udder. "What did I do? Why. I varnishod the milking apparatus of the beasts and the milk couldn't ooze through the flesh. That stopped it. Kew Orleans I" Tiniee -Democrat 1 la a ItuddhUt Naaaarj. Sir Charles Gordon's "Recollectloni of Thirty-nine Years In the Army' contains this anecdote: "In I860, at Tien-tsin, tue two Gordons, when seek iug for hospital sites, came across I Buddhist nunnery. " 'Our regret ' says Sir Charles, 'wat real. Explanations were exebauged. W( were iu formed that the community within adopted male costume as an in dication that they not only renounced the world, but with it the emblems of their sex. We were 'received' by the lady superior, tea and cakes offered tc and partaken of by us. We were then permitted to visit the 'private chapel' and finally we parted from the re ligiunses on the beat of te rma. " Tha Perils of a Critle. I regard a sense of humor as one of the most precious gifts that can be vouchsafed to a human being. He is not necessarily a bettor man for having it, bnt he is a happier one. It renders him indifferent to good or bad fortuno. It enables him to enjoy his own discomfi ture. Blessed with this sense he is novel nnduly elated or cast down. No out can ruflle his temper. No abuse disturU his equanimity. Bores do not bore him. Humbugs do not humbug hirn. Solemn airs do not impose on him. ISeiiti mental gush does not influence him. The follies of the moment have no hold on bim. Titles and decoruiions aro but childish baubles in his eyes Prejudice docs not warp his jndgment. He is uover in con ceit or out of conceit with himself. He abhors all dogmatism. The world is a stage on which actors strut and fret foi bis edification and amusement, and he pursues the even current of his way, in vulnerable, doing what is right and proper according to his lights, but ut terly indifferent whether what he dons Huds approval or disapproval from oth era, If Hamlet had bad any sen so of hu mor, he would not have been nnuisiuict to himself and to all surrounding him, London Truth.
