At The Clackamas County Teachers' Associaiion held a vcy interesting inert- ing at Damascus Saturday, September, 23. 1S93. This was the first regular meeting since Jnne, and was quite en thusiastic. Supt. II. S. Stranite was unfortunately too ill to attend, so the iee-prexident, T. J. Gary, occupied the presidential chair. The minutes of the last meeting as prepared by the secretary, Fannie Q. Porter, were read and approved. The program wa opened by singing "America;" En'a Stnoiprroid'ej1 at the organ. H. M. Stahlaaker, of Sunnyside school gave an interesting Ulk on "School Management." The subject was dis cussed at some length by F. W. Boland, Mr. Tallman, Herbert Lee, Fannie U. Portler and Mrs. 0. P. Hedge. The speakers emphasized the desirability of governing a school without feeming to do so; the necessity of arousing personal pride among pupils, and cultivating right principles. "Composition" was originally assigned to Miss Emma Slurchler, of Clackamas, but as she was absent, the subject was introduced by Miss Jennie E. Rowen and discussed by Mis Louise Boehlke, A. C Strange, T. J. Gary and II. 8. Gibson. Dinner was then announced and it is hardly necessary to state that the Asso ciation adjourned in a Dody, to Mr. Den boer's where a bountiful repast was earnestly discussed. Afternoon Session. Calledto order at 1:30 by the vice president, T, J. Gary. T'ue Association sang "Klad Words," with Miss Hawley as organist. It was lecided to hold the next regular meeting at Ciruj, the last Saturday in October. O. H. Byland, Jennie E. Rowen and Louise Roehlke were asked to prepare a suitable program for the occasion. N. W. Boland gave an excellent ad dress on "History." He would teach the history of the past and the history of today, at the same time. He was followed by Mr. Lee, of Multnomah connty. "Civil Government" was the subject Assigned to A. C. Strange, and as usual, his address was botn interesting and instructive. The proper place to begin the study of Civil Government is ia the home but unfortunately, this Is not always done. The first lesson which a child should be taught Is to respect the rights of others. He should bo made to understand that if he transgresses, punishment will Inevitably follow. Ara McLaughlin, who is a member of the Oregon Volunteers, was present and was called upon for a talk on "Army Life." He related many of his experi ences and graphically described, "Camp Life." He spoke of the museum at San Frauclsco, the Academy of Sciences, the government mint and especially the iron works where the glorious battleship Oregon was built. Being interested school work, he of course visited several of the San Francisco schools, but thinks the Oregon schools are fully as good. Mr. Gibson introduced a rosoultlon thanking the people of Damascus tor their kind and courteous treatment of the Association, which was unanimously adopted. ine attendance at tins meeting was quite)good. On motion the Association adjourned to meet again at Cams, October,29.1S8, makes PHOTO BUTTONS and PHOTO JEW ELRY of every description. Mat Waldhon, Sec, A CRITICAL TIME Daring the Battle of Santiago. SICK OB WELL, A HISU RIGHT AD DAT. rhe Packers at the Battle of Jantiaro de l aba were all Heroes. Their Efforts Were Heroic. P E. Bi'tlkb, of pack-train No. 8, writing from Santiago De Cuba, on July 23d, says: "We all had diarrhoea in more or less violent form, and when we landed we had no time to see a doctor, for it was a case of rush and rush night and day to keep the troops supplied with ammunition and rations, but thanks to Chamberlain's Colic Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy, we were able to keep t work and keep our health; in fact, I sincerely believe that at one critical time this medirine was the indirect saviour of our army, for if the packers bad been unable to work there would hive been no way of getting supplies to the front, There were no roads that a wagon train could use. My comrade and myself had the good fortuuo to lay in a supply of this medicine for our pack-train before we left Tampa, ami I know in four cases it absolutely saved life." The above letter was written to the manufacturers of this medicine, the Chamberlain Medicine Co., Des Moines, Iowa. Fur sale ly Geo. A. Hardin?. Johnson has the best hair cutter in the city. (.HEAP rXlTKSIO.1 KATES. Pled, Dot. an. In this city, September 27, 181)8, Mrs. Bridget Dolan, aged 02 years, ti months ami 3 days. Death, with Its impartiality has (gain invaded a happy home circle and called from the land of sorrow to tho brighter spirit world, the mother and counselor of a largo family of children who have always looked to her for sympathy and comfort In the many trials of this life. Death Is sad In all circumstances and cannot help but appeal to the tender icnsibilities of eyery person who has ever had a home, and especially so when it severs the tie that binds the home circle together. Mrs. Molan leaves six children, two sons, James, now living ia Montana, and Frank, at Baker City; and four daughters, Mary, Marguaret, Kate and Annie, all of this city. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery by the side of her husband who preceded her about nine years ago. The floral offerings were beautiful and were fit emblems of the love and good feeling in which the deceased was held in the community. on i1olrlr, the bond of mutilnvnr row n;lli mI.'Ii n alnlilf ami n. The stories are brimful of fun. When I Stood Face to Face With Death Ceneral A. VV. Creely, the great Arctic ex plorer, tells here, for the first time in print, the graphic story of his fear ful exile of tyi days at the North Pole, when his comrades daily dropped dead at his Hide, anil when all waited day by day for death to come. Miss Wilkins in Her New England Home An entire photographic page will show the author of "Jerome "and "Pembroke" as she is at home : her friends as they grouped around her; going out to walk with her dog; with her favorite cat ; and in nn evening gown ready for a reception. r 4w I:'- de John Wanamakcr's Sunday-Schoo!
