Robinson, who hat charge of the historical department at the Pa cific unlvrmity, wa in the city Monday an 1 delivered an able lecture to the C lautauqiians on "Early Oregon His tory." ' Mm. M. Eaton accompanied by her daughter, Cassle and son James, left Tuuis lay for Monmouth, where they will r.tmaiu during the winter's term of school. Cassis finishes this year and James will enter upon the duties of the Junior class. Mr. and Mm. W. II. Howell and ton William, returned Monday from a very plant outing at Newport. Mra. II well and son have been spending sev eral weeks at this resort and were es corted home by Mr. Howell, who (pent but a few day with them at the coast. C. Cahill, of New Era, narrowly es caped a serious accident last Sunday. While riding horseback a few miles east of New Em, his horse lost its foot ing and fell heavily upon him. Some friends who were mar at hand came to his assistance and took him in in an un conxciou condition to a neighbors. He soon revived, but will feel the effect of hia bruises for some time. An Attempt to Chloroform Her. Last Tuesday at 2 o'clock in the morn inn while S. Green was sitting up with J. Ware he was surprised to hear a heavy knock at the door and respond ing immediately to the summons was confronted by the little daughter of J. Relew. who trembling with fear said that tome one was trying to chloroform her mother. Mr. Green hurried across the street to Mrs Belew'a house at the bead of 7 ih street, and entering lound Mrs. Below out of bed with a revolver in her baud stuggering around In a semi conscious condition. The room was ful' of the strong odor of chloroform, and one window was open a few inches from the bottom. Mm. Belew said she was wakened, by hearing footsteps on the porch but was so nearly overcome with (he deadly drug which filled the room that she was unable to help herself. Just under the open window grew a great quantity of clover several inches in heignt and this was matted down close to the earth appearances indicated that two pairs of shoes tramped upon it. Through the open window the fiendish rascals let in the chloroform but finding that the inmates were awake, escaped befoie their plans materialixed. A night watch should be stationed on the hill before such lawlessness as this is re peated. Electric Hotel Arrival.
