Corner 4th and Main Streets, - Oregon City. t'rVrir VrVr Santiago de Cuha, July 17, 1 p.m. Amid impressive ceremonies, the Spanish troops laid down their arms between the lines of the Spanish and American forces at 8 o'clock this morning. General Shafter and the American division and brigade commanders and their staffs were escorted by a troop of cavalry and General Toral and his staff by 100 picked men. Trumpeters on both sides saluted with flourishes. General Shafter returned to General Toral the latter's pword after it had been handed to the American commander. Our troops, lined up at the trenches, were eye witnesses of the ceremony. Gen eral Shafter ani his escort, accompanied by General Toral, rode through the city tak ing formal possession. The city had been sacked by the Spaniards before they ar rived. General McKibben has been anoointed temnorarv militarv pnvernnr. The ceremony ol hoisting the stars and stripes was worth all the blood and treas ure it cost. A vast concourse of 10,000 people witnessed the stirring and thrilling 6cene that will live forever in the minds of all the Americans present. A finer staeo setting for a dramatic episode it would be difficult to imagine. The palace, a pictur esque old dwelling in the Moorish style of architecture, faces the Plaza de la Reina the principal public square. Opposite rises the imposing Catholic cathedral. On one side is a quaint, brilliantly painted building with broad verandas, the club of San Carlos; on the other a building of the same description, the Cafe de la'Venus." -" ' Across the plaza was drawn up the Ninth infantry, headed by the Sixth cavalry band, in the street facing the palace ttood a picked troop of the Second cavaliy with drawn sabres, under command of Captain Brett. Massed on the stone flagging be tween the band and the line of horsemen were the brigade commanders of General Shafter's division with their staffs. On the red tiled roof of the palace stood Captain McKittrick, Lieutenant Miley and Lieutenant Wheeler. Immediately above them on the flagstaff was the illuminated Spanish arms and the legend "Viva Alfonso XIII." All about, pressing against the veianda rails, crowding the windows and doors and lining the roofs were the people of the town (the women and noncombatants.l js ine cnimes oi me ow catnedrai rang the hour of 12, the infantry and cavalry presented arms. At the same instant the booming of Captain Capron s battery, firing a salute of 21 guns, united in. w nen the music ceased trom all directions around our line came floating across the plaza the strains oi the regimental bands and the muffled hoarse cheers of our troops. ... The infantry came to "order arms" a moment later, after the flag was up, and the band played "Rally 'Round the Flag Boys." Instantly General McKibben called for three cheers for General Shafter, which were given with great enthusiasm, the band playing Sousa's The Stars and Stripes Forever." lhe ceremony over General Shatter and his staff returned to the American lines. leaving the city in the possession of the municipal authrrities, subject to the control of General McKibben. The Thirteenth and Ninth regiments of infantry will remain in the city to enforce order and exercise municipal authority. The Spanish forces are to encamp outside of our lines. The town of Santiago is a dismal sight Most of the houses have been sacked, and the stores have all been looted, and nothing to eat can be had for love or money. In the streets of the citv this morning, at the entrenchments at the breastworks, and at every 100 feet or so of the barbed wire fence were the living skelitons of Span ish soldiers. Why "Grey" HoundT Up to about 800 years ago "grey hounds" were the shaggy, gray colored dogs used In the chase of large game. After that the name was transferred, infllciuntly absurdly, to the black, white, blue r 1 yellow, but generally spotted or bieolored and never gray, dog that is now so popular for ooursing bares. It is very odd that no one, writ ing about the dog, should have insisted upon so obvious an absurdity. On the oontrary, a great luany writers who have written very wisely about the word "grey" have triod to explain away its simplest weuniug by referring to Coltio, Gaolio and Saxon roots, but con sidering those two animals were called indifferently "grey dogs" or "grey hounds" in two words when our lan guage first came to be written, and that iu thoso days "dog" and "hound" were absolutely synonymous, it seems to me as great a waste of wisdom to try to prove that "graie," "gray" or "grey," when it is joined with dog or hound, meant anythiug else but grey as to say that grey-fly means a fly of prinoely ex traction or gray-beard a champion beard. If I were quarrelsome, I should like to preteud that greyhound really means "badgor dog." At any rate I should have sense of language on my sir! for gray, grey, graie aud grei are all L..mea lor tue gray uuugor;, ana i yiw,.,. v. be more absurd than the rest Good Words. A Rat Catcher" Story. There are tricks in all trades, and probably as many in that of the profes sional rat catcher as in any other line According to the story of a man who has made a barrel of money in that business, out who has since drifted iu- to other pursuits, it was once easier to make a living catching rats than by running a shell game at a country fair. "I used to use ferrets for the extermi nation cf the rodents," he said, "and when I received an order to clear a warehouse of the pests I always insisted that the pay should be gauged by the number of rats killed at so much per head. I carried the ferrets in a big wooden box, with a false bottom. Li a secret drawer underneath I would place four or five dozen live rats before start ing out, let them run looso upon reach lug tha place to be rid of rodents, and then f-e the ferrets. Of course, with 60 or 60 rats running around loose, there was always a great slaughter, and some times the ferrets would kill nearly all the rats I turned free. In this way I was always sure of receiving handsome remuneration fur an evening's work up on the presentation of the carcases to the parties who employed me. "Phil adelphia Record.
