A group of papers dealing with tbe Pcmit-ylvunu coal regions appears in The Century. Jay Hauibidge gives "An Artibt's Iuipremiiou cf tbe Colliery Re gion." Mr. Ilambidge saysof one of tbe "patches" where the miners live: Each little house, with tbe boxes, cabby boles and fences about it, has been built by the man who lives in it. And he is a laborer, aitruggler for more existence, not deft iu the use of tools, nor with an eye for tbe symmetrical, nor with an appreciation for anything beyond tbe most primal facts of living. Tbe roofs of the buildings slant at all angles, with no two sides of the same length or deflection. One portion will have eaves, while its companion will scorn the lux ury. Tbe same incongruity prevails ev erywhere. ' Some of the small openings used for window s are high, while others are low. One door will open in and an other ont. The binges have evidently I come from the company scrap pile, and I the staples and latches and locks from the same source. Some of the roofs have shingles, others weatherboards, while others are formed of great pieces of rusty sheet iron. Mualc feliopt on Ocean Liner. From a single venture five years ago small shops for tbe sale of musical in struments have becouio a regular thing on the large Knurs that sail from Eng land to India, Australia and the col onies. From the beginning tbe nmsio shop was quite a success. Perhaps most of its trade runs iu the direction of cheap banjos, which are bought by almost ev ery man ou board before the voyage as a means of passing tbe time. Valuable violius are often more easily disposed of nt sea than on shore, while even pianos meet with at least four or flvo customers osoh voyage, many poo pie disposing of their own instruments before startiug and btiug readily per suaded into buying others to avoid the middleman on lauding. Tbe scabouud ninsio shop agent usual ly travels first class, and as ho is gener ally possessed of gentlemanly manners and glib tongue lie meets with better opportunities for pushing bis wares than be would get under ordinary circum stances. London Globe. Tbe Dead Love. "Mr. James McJames, Baraboo, Wis.," said the clerk at tbe express of fice, reading the address on tbe little package. "What are tbe contents, madam?" "A solitaire diamond ring," replied tbe young woman coldly. "What ia the value?" "Nothing to me," she said, still more ooldly. Chicago Tribune. Legal Notices. Notice for Publication.
