week several tramp were arrested here
and In the absence of uioney to pay their

put to work on the streets to worn oui a
five-day sentence. They had not worked
long, however, when a strike was organ

whereupon they were remanded to jail

acts they showed that it was not work
they wore looking for, in fact they were

to sleep but to work was strictly against
their principles. This shows the charac

highways "loooking for work." The
conditions for the paBt oight months
have been such that no man earnestly
seeking employment need travel far
without finding something to do by
which he could live off his daily labor,
and under the presont status of things
it is not charity to feed these loafers who
travel about the country In groups ol
from two to a dozen under the disguise
of looking for work. Oregon City is
unfortnnatoly situated in regard to the
tramp question. It is a point by
reason of the toiwgraphy of the country
through which all the tramps travel

A Mad IIuhii. Hundreds of people
are nulling North. There is not much
wonder at It. Kvery report from the
gold field only serve to stimulate the
excitement. The world will be aston
ished at the spring's output of the Klon
dike. The mother lode has been discov
ered. Buch are the reports that are
brought out. "1 saw a ton of gold owned
by one man," said one of those who
came out this winter, "and when spring
come be w ill have a much more." No
wonder that people reeling such things
become almost frenzied in their desire to
get to the Yukon at the earliest poasihle
day. Hence a runh ha begun, and
every steamer going North lakes hun
dreds of ieoilu bent on reaching the
land of promise. What do these eople
rxiiectto crowplish? Where do they
expect to spend the next few months?
Tlmy cannot hope to get themselves and
their oui fits over the pasaes at the head
of I.ynn canal. It Is costing the mounted
IMilice, when they move anything at all,
(1,1 00 a ton to get supplies carried a dis
tance of twenty-six miles. How can In
dividual miners hope to do anything at
all. This rush to the passes is madness.
There will be a crush of people there;
and while none u( them need suffer from
hunger or cold, fur they will take enough
to est. ami they need not go far from the
sea level, they will waste their substance
in fruit Icse effort. It is utterly out of
the question for peop'e to think of get
ting into the Yukon valley now by wsy
of the head of I.ynn canal. We make
this statement because we are saiiidh'd
that it ia absolutely true, and because we
think it a pity that men should be guilty
of the insane folly of crowning lo a place
like the head of Lynn canal at this sea
son uf the year. We repeat, so aa not to
be misunderstood, that the Colonirt Is
noloppoteil to the encouragement ol
travel by these routes. It believes that
if there were a doiten more routes into
the Yukon they would not be sufficient
for the host that will seek to use them.
Ily and by It will be possible to make

utilised now. Knowing uiese tilings, u

that after forgetting to take the.oatb of

These Are Kasy Ones.
"Home ol the mathematical prob

Milton citlxen to a reporter the other
day, "especially when I try lo work
them. Now what sense is there in
asking a child how old a nun is if be
is half as old as his brother, who
would have licen the same age a Ins
sister if lie hadn't died More they got

thing esN-cially brilliant in that?
Here is another sample: A yard of
carpet costs 6 cents more than a sack
of coal, and your parlor is half as big
again as your bedroom, but not quite
as big ss your dining room, how much
will It cost to have your parlor cariiet-
ed allowing a holder at 13 per yard,
half as wide as your youngest eon is
old, and how much will jon have left
after buying your wife what she wants
for Christmas? That's an easy cne,
though. You multiply by two, add it
to five, divide by nine, subtract
nothing, and drop dead when you get
the bill."
t
Not For Ever) thing.
But if your kidney, liver or bladder
troublo you will find Swamp Root just
the remedy you need. People are not
apt to get anxious about their health
soon enough. If J oil are "not quite
ell" or "half shk" have you ever
thought that your kl mej s may be the
cause of your sickness?
It is easy to tell by setting aside your
urine for twenty-four houis; a sediment
or settling indicates an unhealthy condi
tion of the kidneys. When urine satins
linen it is evidence of kidney trouble.
To frequent desire lo urinate, scanty sup
ply, pain or dull ache in the back also
convincing proof that the kidneys and
bladder need doctering.
There is satisfaction in knowing that
the great remedy Dr Kilmer's Swarap-
Koot, fulfills every wish in relieving weak
or diseased kidneya and all forms of blad
der and urinary troubles. Not only does
Swamp Koot give new life and activity to
the kidneys the cause of trouble, but by
tieating the kidneys it acts as a tonic for
the entiie constitution. If you need a
medecine you should have the best.
Sold by drugtiists, price fifty cents and
one dollar, or by mentioning the Oregon
Citv Enterprise and sending your ad
dress to Dr. Kilmer A Co., Binghamton,
N. Y. you may have sample bottle of
this great discovery sent to you free by

The Marketing Point
OF CLACKAMAS COUNTY
The factory towns of the . East are noted
for affording the best market to the neigh
boring farmers and gardeners in proportion
to the population of any of the towns in
that section. The reason for this is that
the people of these towns' have a fixed in
come upon which they can always depend,
and, as a consequence, they are liberal buy
ers, paying cash for all their purchases.
As the Great Manufacturing Center

OREGON CITV

This is proven every day by the number
of farmers, who'are to be seen on its streets
selling their produce, who, until just the
last few years, sought the markets of other
towns. The system of macadamized roads
that is being built into all parts of Clack
amas county, will enable all the people of
this county to share in the profitable mar

sure to do, the demands of Oregon City in

past five years, this city will rank next to
Portland as a market place for
