Bad Ar Prepared For th Cava of Comniarea, The clove tree it a uative of the Mo lucca ialaoida and belongs to the fur spread family of myrtles. It is a tall, very handsome evergreen, with ovate, oblong leaves aud purplish flowers, ar ranged iu oorymha ou short joiutod stalks The flowers are produced in great profusion, and when they appear, Which is at the begiuuing of the rainy season, they are iu the form oi elongat ed, greenish buds. These uuexpaudod buds are the cloves of commerce, which derive their name from the Spanish word clavo, "a nail, " so called from tho real or fancied resemblance of the bud to a nail. Sometimes tho clove fruit appears in couiniorce in a dried state, under tho name of "mother cloves " It has an odor and flavor similar to cloves, but is much weaker The flower buds are beaten from the tree aud are dried by the smoke of wood fires and afterward by the sun. If the buds remain on the trees, the calicos gradually swell, the embryo seeds en large and the pungent properties of the cloves are to a great degree dissipated. . Cloves cousist of two parts, a round head, which is, in tuct, the flower rolled up, inclosing a number of small 31a- moil Is. ami thn fnnr rviinta time mr. The entire clove tree is highly aro matic, aud the foot stalks of the leaves have nearly the same pungent quality as the calyx of the flower. Philadel phia Times. DKSPEUADO CUM.
